It’s International Clinical Trials Day – we’ve had clinical trials available for a number of years, but they are often misunderstood. We are one of six health services who are part of the #TrialHub program, a pilot program based at Alfred Health, that is supporting us for the last three years to ensure we’ve got what we need to continue to deliver #cancer clinical trials to our community.  The seven health services involved with TrialHub – Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Latrobe Regional Health, Mildura Base Public Hospital, Northern Health - BC, Bendigo Health, and Peninsula Health - have come together to create a special video to help you understand clinical trials better. Last night, I attended the EndoRISE Kick-Off Event, a community initiative to advance Endometriosis Research, Innovation, Support, and Education. During the event, we learned more about the organization's goals, which include creating the first-ever Biorepository for Endometriosis in the USA. This biorepository will serve as a resource for public health and educate the public, schools, and doctors. The keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Tang, delivered an impactful speech. My key takeaway from her talk was, "Common is not normal; you don’t have to keep suffering." I was thrilled to win a signed copy of her book, which I am excited to dive into and bring to my book club as a conversation piece. We also had more conversations with community members, and I particularly loved the breakout groups. As an endometriosis advocate, I got to voice the areas of focus I’d like the organization to prioritize next. I appreciate that they are reaching out to patients for input on the changes we want to see. There were many great ideas about communication and marketing to raise endometriosis awareness. We reached out to the organizers of the 7th World Bronchiectasis Conference, which took place in Dundee, Scotland, this past July, and they have graciously posted two FREE 50-minute videos featuring leading BE/NTM doctors summarizing the conference highlights. The doctors discuss key insights and reflect on the dynamic progress in the field of bronchiectasis. Fantastic news about our success 🌟 It has been announced that we are one of only two winners for the Health Inequalities Targeted Call, a competitive process by NHS England, NHS Race and Health Observatory, supported by NHS Innovation Accelerator. We have won for our role as catalysts for transformative change in healthcare, and our innovative work in tackling health inequalities, and the Children and Young People’s Peer Mentoring Programme was cited as an example of our work in this area. After a great 2 days at EPA, we have some take-home thoughts from the various interesting discussion topics: - Overcoming access barriers in LMICs is a high priority that is only going to become more important, and needs to be considered early in market access planning. - Sustainability is a key element of product value, and although rarely captured in any way in payer value propositions to date this is likely to require more focus in the future. - Patients are the reason for our efforts, and it is essential to have spoken to real patients to have clarity on both the patient journey and the true unmet needs that matter most. Incorporating lived experiences and a community-based participatory approach not only enhances the effectiveness and sustainability of interventions but also promotes justice and equity.

In my latest addition to the on-going debate about value assessment, I wrote a commentary with Richard Willke, Laura Pizzi, and Peter Neumann re-affirming the importance of measuring how much health a treatment, like a prescription drug, provides to patients. We discuss quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), the move to include alternative measures, and push back against the blunt arguments that QALYs discriminate against people with disabilities, like chronic conditions, and the elderly. Clarifying the terms and how and why to use value assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis continues to be important work towards ensuring patient access to affordable, effective medicines. https://lnkd.in/eDgqcrQW
