For several years, I had the opportunity to be part of a unique company with a truly exceptional workplace culture: Châteauform'. Founded on humanistic values and the constant pursuit of surpassing customer expectations, it taught me that a nimble and engaging corporate culture is the foundation of a successful business in the service of others. Driven by these formative experiences and insights, I found my purpose in helping people and organizations to reimagine customer experience. Just recently, I was explaining to an HR Director how we at Start Reverse support organizations in creating memorable experiences, and she commented that it was all about how to establish a successful company culture. Of course she was right! How can anyone explain what a great customer experience looks like without referencing the team that creates it? They are the ones who live the culture day in and day out and share it with others. Company culture and customer experience are two sides of the same coin, inextricably linked. Outstanding customer experiences do not exist in a vacuum. Rather, they are intentional outcomes of an inclusive and self-reflective culture where employees are not only seen and heard, but even inspired by their work environment, leaders & team. These conditions allow them to make meaningful contributions according to their talents and personal strengths. It sounds obvious, but creating and sustaining outstanding customer experiences requires focus and dedication: while progress begins with small steps, truly exceptional customer experience requires a comprehensive approach. It is a carefully crafted journey with workplace culture at its core. It is never too late to lay the foundation for a transformative culture and thus for unique and unforgettable customer experiences. Customer Service Week earlier this month got me thinking about how work culture sets you apart in an industry. Investing in your team's happiness isn't just a feel-good act . . . it's a game-changer for customer experience, marketing, and #recruiting. 🛍 Take Shipt, Freshly, and Chewy, for instance. I have a secret, and it's scary. CX (candidate experience) informs EX (employee experience) informs CX (customer experience). If a company is hiring for Customer Experience and their hiring process is shitty, there is a toxic culture ahead and a LOT OF WORK to get the customer function right. You want magical amazing customer experiences? Start by making sure your hiring process is awesome. What's awesome? Efficient Informed Empathetic Is anyone surprised that these are the same traits customers look for when engaging customer teams? Shhhhh. It's a secret. The call is coming from inside the house.

James Timpson from the Timpson Group Creating the perfect customer experience means not just hiring the right expertise for a certain job, but hiring customer-centric people into every role too. It's not just about your customer service team - your accounts team, your IT department, all of your back office teams need to be customer-centric too. Now, don't panic if you've already hired and didn't think about CX at the time - you can still provide customer experience training to your non-customer facing teams to help bridge any gaps in culture (we can help with that 😉) In interviews, ask for examples of great customer service they've received, ask them to tell you what made it so good. Ask them to let you know how they currently bring a focus to the customer in their current role - let them get specific. Finally - ask them if the customer is always right. This is such a tough question and one that divides so many. You aren't looking for them to simply parrot 'yes' back at you here. It's important that they really think about the question and provide their honest answer, no matter what that is. For me, someone who explains that customers can sometimes be wrong, but that partnering with them to help them with expectation setting and expectation management can make a big difference to how often they can be left feeling let down would be a good answer. Equally, someone who's just honest and says no, I don't think they are always right might be a strong bet - you can always ask them how they would handle a complaint where the customer was in the wrong. So there you have it everyone - make sure your interviews are screening for customer centricity across EVERY role, and EVERY department. It will make your CX cultural initiatives land so much more smoothly. #CX #CustomerExperience #Recruitment
