We would like to recognize that July is Disability Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring and celebrating the strength, resilience, and accomplishments of people with disabilities. It's important to note that not all disabilities are visible, underscoring the need for kindness and compassion towards others. Our goal is to raise awareness by sharing research. All children are entitled to all the rights and freedoms. However it is not the case for every child. Some children, especially with learning disabilities, still experience every day barriers to be equal members of society. It happens because of so many reasons-information is not delivered in accessible formats, textbooks and learning plans are not adapted to individual needs, teachers are not skilled, poor quality of healthcare and negative attitudes. It often starts with attitudes, with shift of perceptions, recognizing that all of us are unique and valued as individuals. As many youth and adults with disabilities pointed out in WDSD 2024 campaign (https://lnkd.in/eyYUs9Ta) stereotypes are powerful. They can hurt children, families and often prevent policies and services from becoming equal and for everyone, ultimately jeopardizing inclusion.    12 years ago on 21 March we started observing the Down Syndrome Awareness Day , to recognize diversity, value individual characteristics and expand the vision for an inclusive world for every child. UNICEF is working to break the stigma and discrimination experienced by persons with disabilities so every child can fulfill their potentials, just like 16-year-old Senayit, Video from Ethiopia.   On World Down Syndrome Day 2024, we call for Everyone to End The Stereotypes! Inclusion starts with Me, with you, with All of Us! 

Persons with #disabilities constitute 16% of the world's population, with 80% living in the Global South. They are frequently the most affected by natural hazards, climate-induced disasters, and global health emergencies. #DRR #RiskManagement

Here are 3 eye-opening excerpts from the article: "Today, more than 25 percent of individuals with disabilities in America live in poverty – more than twice the rate of individuals without disabilities. It is a deeply rooted problem in federal statutes that have not been reformed in over 80 years." "However, only 40.6 percent of individuals with disabilities are actively participating in the labor market. That’s nearly half the rate of individuals without disabilities. The unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is 9.3 percent, which is more than twice the rate of those without disabilities." "Regardless, less than 5 percent of housing nationwide is accessible for people with moderate mobility difficulties and less than 1 percent is accessible for wheelchair users. A group of researchers, parents and youth under the leadership of Kinga Pozniak studied the impact of the #COVID-19 pandemic for Canadian children with disabilities and their families. Families faced a mix of disruptions and unexpected advantages during the pandemic—routine supports like healthcare, education, and social activities were often interrupted or moved online, creating significant challenges. However, some families also reported positive experiences, such as greater family cohesion and the beneficial use of online solutions for education and healthcare. Moving forward, the study identifies a critical need for flexible, consistent, and comprehensive support services that foster relationships and are coordinated across healthcare, education, and community services. These services should accommodate the varied needs of different families and include supports for the entire family, not just the disabled child. The findings emphasize the importance of adaptable, inclusive support systems in improving the well-being of children with disabilities and their families in the post-pandemic landscape. #participatoryresearch https://ow.ly/TSum50Rl8Cf
