The cloud is not a cloud. Despite the fact that we probably know this, we insist on deflecting from the real identity, which is that the cloud is actually physically visible through submarine cables and data centers... ☁️ Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Questioning Creatives on The World Wide Web hosted by the incredibly inspiring PUBLIC SERVICE, with the great speakers of Ada Ada Ada, Sophie Gevind, Anne Katrine Raahede, and Jennifer Maria Matos Tonndorff! Dwelling specifically on the topic of how our internet culture and public debate utilize and challenge our creative force, I encountered a very rare, but desperately needed space. A space that thrived in the ambiguity of loving internet culture and emerging tech while at the same time constantly feeling the urge to be critical and skeptical about its entire premise. 🎀 It’s within this ambiguity, where we are reproducing compelling narratives and marketing strategies—like the cloud being a cloud—all while we’re consuming and shopping in an internet culture that is both liberating and oppressing. In its paradox, it both challenges and reuses marginalizing stereotypes, knowledge distribution, etc. However, I actually generally believe that this certain ambiguity is what can also bring us forward. Because once again it became inevitable how there’s an enormous potential in trying to grasp this paradox within the framework of #weaponizedcuteness, which Dea Patricia Larsen made me aware of a year ago. The very notion and distinction of how cuteness within narratives and aesthetics are at the very heart of the ambiguity within our current governmental and democratic practice in tech and internet culture. Feeling inspired and hopeful, I’m now looking forward even more to discussing the intersection between tech, inequality, and democracy in the following weeks when I touch grass at Folkemødet as well as Responsible Tech London, hosted by the great All Tech Is Human.
