Businesses are the building blocks of the economy. Businesses are built using money. When business needs money, finance provides it. Institutions of agency, authority and accountability aggregate money set aside by others, for a time, for a purpose, and deploy those aggregations as money made to flow into enterprise, for its use in doing its work, for a time, at a cost and on terms that establish the cardinal principles according to which that business must do business. The terms of finance on which money is made to flow into enterprise forms the businesses that forms the technologies that form the choices that form the economy that forms society, and our shared future and the possibilities from among which we each can form our own personal and private worlds in which we live our own best lives as best we can under the circumstances then prevailing, personally and privately, using money. Money is the social energy that wires together our shared world for living together in society, through economy that we form thorough our technologies out of the natural world into which we all are born, and the personal and private worlds that we all form for ourselves out of the shared world of the economy that we make together. The corporation is a standard set of terms on which the financial institution of the capital markets will flow money into enterprise for its use. Those terms are designed to support liquidity in the capital markets through volatility and growth in the market clearing prices for shares of equity ownership in that corporation. Would we ever consider designing a different set of terms, with a different institution of finance, on which money is made to flow into business? Would we ever consider, for example, negotiated agreements between enterprise and fiduciary money on equity paybacks to an actuarial/fiduciary cost of
"We are often gagged by our employers for telling the truth... that we cannot grow our way out of this problem." Wow this 10-minute talk from former founder of Drawdown Labs Jamie Beck Alexander is essential watching for anyone who wants to better understand our failure to halt global warming and especially why we are currently seeing corporations across industries failing to meet even modest climate targets. This reflects what I have been hearing from folks in my network of corporate sustainability practitioners who are banging their heads against a wall as they come to realise that it is simply impossible for companies to get progressively cleaner while also growing the bottom line quarter on quarter. The entire business model is unsustainable to the core. Similarly, the many people from my "mainstream" network who frequently write in private to thank me for my work, because they cannot "like" my growth-critical posts for fear they will be spotted by their clients or employers. Like Jamie I went freelance to be able to work on transforming the economic system and I am in the privileged position that I can afford a lower and less stable income. Many people cannot, and we have a whole generation of young people who are both uniquely precarious (no chance of ever affording a home, AI eroding their employment prospects before they even graduate, a future of insurmountable student debt) and - because this is their future - uniquely motivated to do something about it (if they have not already given up or overburdened by climate anxiety). So that, asks Jamie, are we ready to get out of our comfort zones and leave well-paid sustainability jobs (or any job for that matter!) to work on genuine solutions? To that I might add: How can we "grow" the number of people working on post-growth pathways? How can we support researchers and academics, policymakers, practitioners, workers and activists? How can we make it more feasible for more people to do as Jamie has done? These are really spot-on learnings from the #shippingdecarbonisation space and I would argue they are very useful in other sectors and within organisations. If you're working with the #greentransition I encourage you to read this short piece.
In the latest edition of Bunkerspot Sandra Fisher-Martins and I share our 10 key learnings on how to unlock the power of collaboration to address complex problems such as shipping decarbonization. In the article, we use examples from initiatives in which we have been involved, including the Getting to Zero Coalition and the Poseidon Principles. We hope our learnings will resonate and inspire others to embark on the journeys of collaborative and transformative change that we need to reach our shared climate goals. Big thanks to Ian Taylor for giving us the opportunity to share our thoughts. #ClimateCareerWeek is wrapping up. Excited to see the high engagement throughout the week. I moderated a panel on Wednesday ("Your Future Job In Climate - Climate Innovation Insights") w/ over 400 attendees 💪 -- check out the attached recording. 🙌 Thanks to panelists Anu Sanghvi (The Greenhouse), Allison Myers (Buoyant Ventures), and Tim Wolters & Leah Bowes (CrowdSolve) for an informative recap of what's happening in early-stage global climate innovation. Here are some highlights... 👉 20,000+ investments have been made by accelerators over the last 10 years 👉 ~$260 bn has been invested in climate startups since 2018 👉 We're still falling short by $800 bn/yr of our required investment level to achieve net zero by 2050 👉 There is an est. 3-5k “climate” start-ups globally, and highest growth areas of new ventures are ag & food, circular economy & electrification (in that order) 👉 Access to technology is democratizing knowledge and access to resources to enable founders anywhere to mimic the “Silicon Valley Experience” 👏 Thanks to our sponsors Terra.do, Climate Draft, Work on Climate, Climate People and CrowdSolve. We appreciate your efforts!!! #ClimateCareerWeek #climateinnovation
