Thrilled to announce the release of the October 2023 issue of NewsRARE, Spain's pioneering scientific outreach magazine dedicated to rare diseases . Founded in 2016, NewsRARE continues its commitment to shedding light on rare disease-related topics. This international issue explores "Innovative financing, European funds, and best practices". Integration with the international Vivactis group has opened new horizons for NewsRARE. We've collaborated with Vivactis HM3A and Vivactis Weber to launch this English supplement, extending the reach of NewsRARE to Europe. The integration of Weber into the international Vivactis group has offered us the opportunity to expand NewsRARE beyond the Spanish-speaking region (Spain and Latin America). For this reason, in collaboration with HM3A, we have launched this international English-language supplement to disseminate the content of NewsRARE in Europe and the Anglo-Saxon world. Includes, between others, articles as: 'Successful cases that transformed the lives and environments of people living with rare diseases' (Fernando Abdalla and Nérea Zozaya) and revision of articles as ' The added value of a European Reference Network on rare and complex connective tissue and musculoskeletal diseases: insights after the first 5 years of the ERN ReCONNET' from Antoni Montserrat Moliner. Did you know? Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence actions under Horizon Europe contribute to building research and innovation capacity for countries lagging behind in terms of research and innovation performance. Participants in the programme will be able to upgrade their research and innovation systems, making them stronger and allowing the EU as a whole to advance together, in line with the policy objectives of the European Research Area. Discover how the PhasAGE project created a research centre to boost Europe’s research capacity to prevent and treat age-related diseases! This, and other success stories from the Horizon Europe #Widening programme, are featured here ➡️ europa.eu/!PBcyqN

MYCOBIOME 🍄 🏥 👨⚕️ I am truly amazed by the groundbreaking work of Raphaël Enaud and his scientific team. Their research on the Mycobiome and the gut-brain axis is pioneering, shedding light on the intricate interactions between fungi, the immune system, and gut bacteria. Their contributions are profoundly advancing our understanding of this complex ecosystem and its impact on human health.

This week, I had the opportunity to attend the 3rd Virtual International Conference on Carotenoids, where I was pleased to present the results of an experiment I've been working on as part of my Master's Thesis: "Evaluating metabolic programming by β-carotene during the perinatal stage in mice lacking or expressing BCO1." It was a great opportunity to update current knowledge on the multiple health benefits of carotenoids.

The BY-COVID project was set up in 2021 to learn from the technical gaps that hindered the ability to investigate SARS-CoV-2 in the early stages of the pandemic. Euro-BioImaging's FAIR Image Data Steward, Isabel Kemmer, takes a moment to look back at what achieved over the past three years and celebrate the successful outcomes of the project. 🎉 ▶️ The project is an excellent example of successful interdisciplinary work across country borders. The results of the project give scientists from different fields, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and industry, access to a wide range of data they can use to gain new insights into infectious diseases. ▶️ It brought together and coordinated dispersed datasets from different sources, as well as developed resources, data standards and guidelines to enable a rapid response to novel emerging threads. Blessed to announce my first paper from the Daunert-Deo lab has been officially published. It's on the vaginal microbiome and a certain mechanism known as quorum sensing that bacteria use to propagate diseases like bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. By inhibiting quorum sensing, one can reduce the severity of these infections and allow antibiotics to finish the job as quorum sensing typically prevents antibiotics from fully working. The link for the paper is listed below: https://lnkd.in/ehYmYGeb

Is the world’s current state of pandemic preparedness better or worse than pre-COVID-19? How does geopolitics affect disease research? And how can we improve health research mobility to better prepare for future pandemics? Last week, CEPI’s Chief of Staff and Executive Director for Governance Strategy and Portfolio, Joseph Simmonds-Issler, joined an expert panel at the Transatlantic Big Science Conference in Berlin, Germany, to discuss key themes relating to biopreparedness and health. Speaking alongside Edith Heard, EMBL, John Hill, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Chikwe Ihekweazu, World Health Organization, and Matthias H. Tschöp, Helmholtz Munich, the panel discussed the challenges of working on globally neglected diseases and the leading approaches to enhance international scientific resilience in a crisis. Jointly organised by the US-based Carnegie Science and the EU-based DESY, the Transatlantic Big Science conference brings together international scientific leaders, researchers and policymakers to highlight a wide range of exciting new research and explore how scientists on both sides of the Atlantic can collaborate most productively.
