Are you in Berlin this weekend or next week? Don’t miss these events that the German physics community has put together to celebrate that CERN, that international research centre near Geneva that you may have heard of, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year! 1 September, 6 pm, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche Berlin Concert ‘Creazione/Schöpfung - Fragments’ Epic Big Bang in the Memorial Church! In her opera “Creazione/Schöpfung”, Hamburg composer Gloria Bruni has created a spectacular soundtrack to the beginning of everything. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Vocalconsort Berlin will perform under the direction of Wolf Kerschek; in addition, a choir of employees from Universität Hamburg and the DESY research centre will chant one of the central formulas of particle physics. Join us on a powerful journey to the great questions of humanity. Tickets: https://lnkd.in/eei-HS52 2 September, 7:30 pm, Futurium Berlin, Alexanderufer 2 Talk evening “CERN stories": Behind the scenes at CERN: what's it like to be a PhD student during a scientific revolution - the discovery of a new particle? How was it possible for GDR scientists to be allowed to travel to the West to conduct research in the middle of the Cold War? What is the point of all this expensive particle smashing? An evening with anecdotes, memories and perspectives by and with people who work or have worked at the CERN research centre. Come and chat with the talk guests afterwards over cold drinks. Admission is free; please register: https://lnkd.in/eVHmS53b 2-4 September, Futurium Berlin, Alexanderufer 2 Exhibition 70 years of CERN This exhibition at Futurium Berlin is so much more than just an exhibition! It offers many hands-on experiments, several science shows per day, an interactive accelerator tunnel, visible particles and much more. Real researchers will be happy to explain the research that has been carried out at CERN in Geneva for 70 years, what you can get out of it and what it all has to do with Germany. Science Show: Seeing the invisible : Journey through a detector How do researchers at CERN detect particles that are hundreds of trillions of times smaller than a human hair? And what does all this have to do with scorpions?  Hands-on workshops: ‘Seeing the Invisible’ - try to make the invisible visible yourself. Just like the CERN researchers, you have to rely on the information available to you and continue to refine it and your thesis in order to uncover the secret of the workshop. ‘Power of Air’ - how do you manage to move heavy components using only air? You can try it out for yourself here! When? Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (2 – 4 September) from 10 am to 6 pm. Please sign up for workshops, science shows and exhibition slots. 60 years ago, DESY performed the first experiments with synchrotron radiation emanating from its original DESY accelerator ring. Since then, DESY X-ray science has been pioneering, extending from developing Germany’s first dedicated storage ring facility in DORIS; to decoding biological structures including for the ribosome, which led to a Nobel Prize; to creating the first X-ray free-electron laser; to making the first steps to miniaturising accelerators. Many thousands of scientists from across the globe have done work here in these sixty years, and countless collaborations, including those with EMBL and University of Hamburg, have been formed to make the most of the expertise in synchrotron radiation here. Today, we held a special colloquium to mark the occasion – including remarks from Weizmann Institute of Science professor and Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath, who spent twenty years working on DESY facilities and did some of her most important work here – and presentations from ESRF - The European Synchrotron director Francesco Sette, DESY lead scientists Saša Bajt and Harald Reichert, RIKEN Managing Director Tetsuya Ishikawa, former European XFEL directors Massimo Altarelli and Robert Feidenhans’l, and former DESY scientific director and CERN general director Rolf Heuer, and more. Happy Anniversary, Synchrotron Light at DESY!! #synchrotron60

A musical dialogue between science and spirituality: An opera that takes the audience from nothing to existence: where do we come from? Where are we heading? How and why did it all begin? Questions about the beginning and the infinite nature of existence have kept humankind occupied for thousands of years. The search for answers provides comfort, expands knowledge and technology and sometimes brings people to the brink of despair. All these elements can be found in the opera "Creazione/Creation" by Gloria Bruni, which will be performed on 1 September at 6 p.m. in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. This performance is part of the German celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the international research centre CERN near Geneva. #artmeetsscience

#Antibioticresistance is a major threat to #healthcare globally. As scientists continue to look for ways to fight bacterial infection, we may be uncovering a method of making bacteria once more vulnerable to some of the oldest tools in our antibiotic arsenal. Using a variety of light sources, a group led by University of Hamburg molecular biologist Christian Betzel and including Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf and Center for Free-Electron Laser Science Hamburg researchers is investigating the use of boric acid compounds to block an enzyme that enables resistance to a common class of antibiotics, including #penicillin. In a recent paper in Nature Communications Chemistry, their work at DESY's #PETRA3 light source is described, including how they've watched boric acid disabling the enzyme. (Picture: Andreas Prester, UKE) Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDsSiTRD

    • A diagramme shows the development of a bond between a boric acid molecule and an enzyme. Shown is an enzyme in purple as well as the model of the acid molecule in yellow and red, with a description of the time taken to bind the acid (100 ms, and 150 ms with glycerol).
