Did you know that some historical property records have language that include "Racial Covenants," preventing people who are not white from purchasing property in a given area? I'm excited to begin my volunteer work with Justice InDeed's project "Mapping Prejudice," where we review and transcribe information in various property records identifying these racial covenants so they can map out where these barriers exist. As the debate around reparations intensified in California, members of the Black community stepped forward to share their perspective on what should be done to address systemic racism. In KQED’s “The Road to Reparations in California”, we learn how citizens in other states have held organizations and communities accountable for past wrongs. The video is a look at how reparations can be accomplished. And now that the California Reparations Task Force has delivered its landmark 1,200-page report with 115 recommendations for reparative measures, it will be up to the state legislature — and pressure from community organizers — to keep the momentum moving toward restitution. https://lnkd.in/g635vJGM

Founder, L.O.V.E. Is The Answer Movement. Joseph R. Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree. USAF Veteran. TV Host. Author. Filmmaker. Antiracist Reimagining Public Safety & Health. Member IACP, NAAAHR.
Gov. Wes Moore, sadly, another young person lost and another family and school traumatized by senseless violence. Also, sadly, a post I wrote just a day ago became outdated before sunset. I wrote about the 45th school shooting of the year, and now Maryland is home to the 46th. Most won’t read my post but I am hoping that you will. In it, there’s solution. As veterans, we know that “thoughts and prayers” is not a strategic plan. Neither is hardening of schools a complete plan. That’s a defensive tactic that only addresses the back end of the issue, not the root cause. We need a strategy that will stop these incidents from happening in the first place. That strategy, developed by a team of Marylanders, is outlined in the link and we already have proof that it works to stop violence before it happens. Our work was recognized and supported by Rep Elijah Cummings, Rep Debbie Dingle, and other members of Congress, & was honored by President Biden. It’s time that we spread the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer principles throughout our K-12 schools. Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) https://lnkd.in/eZ9-vRSW
The First Lady and I are heartbroken for the Joppatowne community as we grieve the loss of a life cut short. Maryland prays for the young victim of this senseless act, Warren Curtis Grant – as well as his family, friends, teachers, mentors, and loved ones. My full statement:

Today we mark the anniversary of the 2008 formal apology to Australia’s Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their families and communities when they were children, through race-based policies set up by both State and Federal Governments in 1910 and continued as recently as the 1970s. We recognise the trauma experienced and ongoing for the Stolen Generations survivors and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were separated from family, community and culture. Through hearing their stories, and ongoing deep listening, we hope to join in on the healing journey and to be part of the solution into the future. Last year we launched our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP outlines 27 actions with 109 corresponding deliverables that inform and improve our practice. These deliverables were developed from consultations held across the country including truth-telling with Aboriginal Elders. We continue our deep listening so together we can support better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, communities, and families.

We need to stand for justice - we need to hold each other accountable to standards that promote justice, and we all need to behave in ways that create the conditions for access to justice - this is how we build strong “villages”!!! https://lnkd.in/gTtYDUTm
