On October 8, 2024, Brantford City Council will consider a proposal for a new Sport and Entertainment Centre (SEC), a major development that could transform the City’s downtown and significantly improve the quality of life for residents. The proposal details the development of a multi-use venue that will be the new permanent home of the Brantford Bulldogs, as well as support other sports, concerts, trade shows, and cultural events, positioning Brantford as a key entertainment destination in Ontario. With a seating capacity of over 5,000, the venue will attract higher-profile entertainment and events that the City is currently unable to accommodate. The proposed SEC will play a central role in the City’s broader downtown revitalization efforts. If approved, the project is expected to generate $13.2 million in annual economic activity and create approximately 100 jobs. The facility would also serve as the new permanent home for the Brantford Bulldogs, contributing an additional $4.8 million annually, including $900,000 from out-of-town visitors. Council’s consideration of the SEC proposal follows a series of public and key stakeholder consultations and detailed planning to ensure the Centre complements the ongoing revitalization of the downtown core. The SEC is part of the City’s larger vision to boost economic growth, enhance recreational opportunities, and support community well-being. The total cost of the SEC is projected at $140 million, and the comprehensive financing plan, which includes contributions from both public and private partners, is designed to maintain the Centre’s financial stability, without relying on taxpayers for additional funding. If approved to move forward, construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the opening anticipated in early 2028. The public is encouraged to attend the Special Committee of the Whole meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday October 8th or watch on the City’s YouTube channel, to learn more about the proposal and its potential to transform downtown Brantford. Read full release: https://bit.ly/3zPeCNF Information regarding speaking to Council/delegating at the meeting can be found on the City’s website at https://bit.ly/3BsPehk. #Brantford | #BrantfordNews

Manchester AfterDark Attended: We were happy to get a look around the new attic space at Joshua Brooks on Saturday for the fourth in their Day Time Disco series, this one featuring Mousse T. Here's what we found. Accessed via stairs at front-of-house, with a 150 capacity and natural light (until sunset anyway), we get a quite different space from the familiar basement. That daylight comes partially from east-facing windows, but mainly from west-facing. It then reflects off white walls so that natural light is made the most of. After dark, artificial light comes from a series of subtle LED strips suspended from the ceiling that cycle through red, green and blue. Sound is solid without being overpowering, presumably to also meet council restrictions so as to not disturb local residents, and, unlike many venues, it's in surround. Plenty of clubs we visit only fit their sound system at one end of a room, where the DJ performs. The JB attic has a speaker in each corner. The west interior wall is fitted with several double booths and tables, holding from 6 to 8 people and each with its own TV. While it's ideal for showing sporting events, it's a little superfluous for a club night. But, it's also good to have the choice to take a rest if it's needed. These booths are directly facing the DJ area, which is where most dancers preferred to be. This means that there can be a bit of a bottleneck in that space, depending on numbers. But if being in the thick of the crowd and the peak of the atmosphere is your aim, this is the spot. The south wall is shared between more booths and two darts cubicles. No toilets on this floor, so it's back down to the existing ground floor facilities for those. Now the DJ area. We haven't seen this in years, but the DJ stand and the bar area are one and the same. You're DJ'ing inside the large square bar area and working alongside the other staff. Looking forward to hearing tales about international superstar DJ's having inebriated young women lean towards the decks and ask them for five Sambucas. Get served on the stairs-side or the darts cubicles-side of the bar, and avoid the DJ side, where you won't get any service. Overall, this is a great new addition to the city's clubbing spaces, with clear multi-purpose usage due to the screens, booths and dart boards. One question is what future nightlife use it might see once the summer is over. Our visit was for a 4pm until 10pm event, which ended as the 100% Late Replies party began in the basement. Will this attic hold separate ticketed club events at the same time as the basement, but with a different music genre to avoid any clash? Could it act as an expansion, 'a room two' of whatever party is in the basement with traffic between the rooms? Could it be opened up to outside promoters? We're looking forward to finding out the answers

After hearing some negative comments surrounding the Travis Scott concert at Eden Park from excess noise and vibration through houses of residents to the long, difficult journeys faced by ticket holders, I believe it’s time for Auckland to build a dedicated downtown stadium. Friends of mine in Mt Eden reported high noise levels which I empathize with young families living in the area as it was a school night. My stepdaughter attended the concert, and it took her and her friends two hours to reach the stadium from East Auckland which is ridiculous as its 20kms away. As John Kirwan said recently, Eden Park is essentially "a pig", it’s a patchwork of stands that doesn’t provide ideal viewing for rugby and is poorly suited to cricket because of its small dimensions. Redeveloping Eden Park is akin to putting “lipstick on a pig”; even at a billion dollars, it would still offer a subpar experience. A downtown stadium would eliminate many of these problems. For one, it would breathe life into the city centre, creating a focal point that Auckland currently lacks, especially compared to cities like Sydney and Melbourne. Secondly, a downtown location wouldn’t be limited by Eden Park’s restrictions on the number of concerts. Thirdly, a downtown stadium would be served by all modes of transport, making it far more accessible than Eden Park, which has limited transport options and lastly the fan experience would be second to none with designs that have been proposed. While funds are scarce in the current economic climate, doing nothing means we’ll continue to face the same issues with our stadiums. With private investment, plus contributions of land and support from the council, government, and iwi, a new stadium could benefit Auckland’s future generations. Imagine over 50 events downtown each year: 10–15 rugby games, 13 league games, a few football matches, concerts, expos, and more. Local businesses, bars, and restaurants would flourish, transforming the city centre into a world-class destination. I want to support my local Super Rugby team The Blues but don’t enjoy Eden Park which is a feeling of a lot of my friends. Build it and they will come as fans want an experience now. Working in construction our sector needs signature projects and being a sports lover, I would love to hear Aucklanders’ thoughts on this. Please feel free to share your views. Alistair Doyle

Help Save Boxpark Shoreditch, a cornerstone of Shoreditch’s vibrant community. Boxpark Shoreditch is facing an uncertain future. As a valued member of the hospitality, night-time economy, and events community, your voice is crucial in preserving this beloved venue and the future of their independent retailers. By completing this form, you are joining the fight to safeguard Boxpark Shoreditch and its essential role in our community. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, has spoken out on this pressing issue: “Boxpark Shoreditch exemplifies the exact issue faced across the country with red tape and restrictive regulatory controls stalling business investment. This has to stop. People are fed up. The new Government has made an amazing start, and I call on them to reach into the local authority and invigorate the local planning department and Hackney Council to find a solution.” Nadia Jae (TV & Radio Presenter) from the ARIA Winning BBC 1Xtra Breakfast Show shared her thoughts: “Boxpark Shoreditch has been a second home for me. I’ve had days out, nights partying and it’s always a safe and enjoyable experience. As a DJ it’s home to my NJ & Friends terrace party where I’ve had nights I will never forget. I’ve partied with my family, celebrated my birthday, made new friends and even have the bar staff singing along to music because we have such a good time. Sundays I’ve brought my nieces and nephews to day parties at Boxpark, it’s always a safe and fun environment and is the heartbeat to Shoreditch. I can’t imagine life without it. Night life as a DJ in London is already concerning with so many venues closing down, but not only does Boxpark provide nightlife it does something that no other venue does. It provides a daytime experience of food, vibes and cultural events such as football for all to come along and enjoy. This campaign is important for highlighting what a huge hole will be left if Boxpark Shoreditch was to close. Truly there is no other place like it.” This is on behalf of the 50+ businesses that depend on it, the hundreds of staff whose jobs rely on it and the millions of visitors who flock to it each year, we call upon Hackney Council to do all it can to prevent BOXPARK Shoreditch from closure. We have initiated a campaign to save BoxPark Shoreditch. Your help and support would be greatly appreciated.
