MONITOR DISTRIBUTION: Out of an "abundance of caution," residents who live adjacent to the long-closed City of Covington landfill in Latonia will receive monitors from state and local officials beginning today designed to alert homeowners to any elevated levels of methane and carbon monoxide in and around their homes. https://bit.ly/3AKHCGk CAPTION: The lower area of the now-named Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex, as seen in a historical photo used courtesy of the Kenton County Public Library. For decades, that lower area was the site of the F.O.P.A. baseball fields in the shadow of the operating City landfill, which closed in 1986.

We have spent decades fighting to protect the public lands where we hike, float, camp, and pursue wild fish and big game—and we can’t let up now. The state of Utah recently filed a legal complaint with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking state control of 18.5 million acres of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. If the lawsuit succeeds, it could set a dangerous precedent, putting at risk public access and conservation gains across millions of acres of public lands nationwide. Read more from TU’s president and CEO about what’s at stake, why this could be the biggest threat to public lands yet, and how you can help: https://bit.ly/4h1NAnc

Check out this news report shared with me by my friend from Kansas Dan Scherschligt. Investigative journalism on a topic that actually matters! It's long, but that's because the issues are not well understood by people outside of the industry. Here in Oregon, apparently unlike Michigan and similar to Ohio, we have mostly asphalt roads and have a robust materials laboratory training and certification program. Our problem is that our funding model is broken and we only have 3 primary road funding mechanisms - gas taxes, weight-mile taxes (trucking), and registration fees. With a limited number of funding sources, the amount generated from each needs to be higher than in states that have more sources, but again how we pay for roads is not well understood and that breeds skepticism. https://lnkd.in/gv_v2Mf9
Why can't Michigan fix the damn roads?
