"The Commission's record of documentation, nomination, and protection of historic resources exemplifies that for which all preservation commissions should strive." That's what NAPC Award Committee Co-Chair Rebecca Goodwin told City staff when they were handed the Commission of the Year award. The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions recently recognized our Historic Preservation Commission's work in creating ReflectDSM. This initiative focuses on community engagement and inclusivity in efforts to recognize and preserve as much of the city's history as possible. Congratulations on the recognition and award! Council buildings for community decision-making, including Senate, assembly, synagogue, and Greek bouleuterion, hold usually no more than five hundred participants. The personal interaction between them is of the utmost concern. They often have galleries for observer seating. 📍Philadelphia City Hall, Pennsylvania pg. 189, The Art of Classic Planning #councilbuildings #philadelphia #classicplanning #traditionalarchitecture

"City and Caltrans staff have a certain level of technical training, but it is really the folks in the neighborhoods and school sites who are the best source of information regarding existing conditions, as well as what types of solutions and improvements will actually be of use in the community." Mario Anaya, community development director of the City of Tulare, shares in our latest Safety Story of his work to improve safety for those who walk, bike, and roll in Tulare, including with the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) program. Founder and Director @ Soulgen | Building Social Capital, Driving Social Innovation & Impact, Enhancing Community Wellbeing
The book seems very interesting and speaks to a topic close to my heart. Emphasizing ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development) and codesign principles, it's about relationship building and empowering communities. Adding to this from my experience, facilitators can play an important role in creating spaces where people can not only warm up to each other but also to the purpose at hand. It's about nurturing relationships that are inherently healing and building social capital as a means to collectively drive meaningful change from the inside out and from the bottom up. Relationships are very important and will sustain the work and often there is "work" to be done. What other people think?
Excited to get my copy of this new edition. I love how the framing of community-engaged practice by Jade Lillie and Kate Larsen provides a bridge between my former research focus on community cultural development and current work focus on co-design and communities of practice. Of course they're all connected! The title says it all.

Black communities in Canada have been marginalized and undervalued by the planning and design of cities. Today we launch part one of our new docuseries ‘Nothing for us, without us’, which explores the ways that anti-Black racism is embedded in the policies and practices of urban development, renewal and gentrification and argues that Black businesses, organizations and leadership are missing from the rooms where planning decision are made, resulting in the unequal distribution of services and resources in urban areas. Part 1, 'Digging up the roots', looks at the history of urban planning, policy and engineering, and how they neglected and dismissed Black communities and their needs, knowledge and experience. Attended the premiere screening of Nothing For Us, Without Us tonight. about #antiblackracism in #urbanplanning in Canada. The film and discussion afterwards were really interesting. Exploring Africville, Hogan's Alley and the impact of the LRT construction on Little Jamaica. I'm not sure where it will be available in the future, but if you do planning ir community development work watch out for it Some key insights: To do community consultation well, you have to start with mapping community power. The biggest predictor for eviction notices in Toronto is the number of Black folks living in a particular neighbourhood. Data, racialized data is vital. So is understanding the differences in opinion between different groups (renters vs. owners, different cultural groups, age groups) "Governments now require engagement, but they don't require authentic engagement." Cheryll Case "The metric has to be are the Black folk who want to remain in the neighbourhood still living there. What about in 30 years? Who is going to be enjoying the new condos and new infrastructure being built today in Little Jamaica in the future?" Kofi Hope, DPhil
