Wetlands are considered the Earth’s kidneys because of their ability to clean the soil from heavy metals to produce potable water. But for most ASEAN communities, wetlands are their lifeline, as wetlands help protect them from storm surges, provide ecotourism opportunities, and serve as a source of livelihood. As we celebrate this year’s #WorldWetlandsDay, we encourage everyone to be on the lookout for sustainable initiatives for wetland conservation that you can take part in. Every action counts in saving the Earth’s most threatened ecosystem! #worldwetlandsday2024 #WeAreASEANBiodiversity #ASEANBiodiversity #aseancentreforbiodiversity

🌊 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗷𝗶 🌍 In Macuata Province, Fiji, communities are blending ancestral knowledge with modern conservation to protect the precious Cakaulevu – the Great Sea Reef – and build resilience against climate change. Through the sacred 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝘂 (temporary fishing closures) and the establishment of a 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 (𝗠𝗣𝗔), locals are not only restoring ecosystems but securing their livelihoods. Led by 𝗪𝗪𝗙-𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 and supported by 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 (𝗖𝗥𝘅𝗡), these efforts are showing remarkable success. Schools of mullet, baby sharks, and faster-growing sea grapes are testament to the positive impacts. This innovative mix of tradition and nature-based solutions is also paving the way for sustainable livelihoods, like 𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗰𝘂𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. Together, tradition and conservation are proving to be powerful tools in creating a sustainable future. Let's celebrate this incredible blend of local wisdom and modern conservation! 💚🌿 #ClimateAction #Conservation #SustainableLivelihoods #Fiji #NatureBasedSolutions #Resilience #WWFPacific WWF WWF-Pacific https://lnkd.in/dh-myNTr

THE ART OF WETLAND CONSERVATION: CAPTURING NATURE'S BEAUTY Wetland conservation is a vital practice that intertwines environmental stewardship with natural artistry. These ecosystems, brimming with biodiversity, act as nature’s water purifiers and carbon sinks. Protecting wetlands ensures the survival of myriad species, maintains water quality, and mitigates climate change impacts. The lush landscapes of wetlands, adorned with vibrant flora and diverse fauna, offer breathtaking vistas and essential habitats. Efforts to conserve and restore wetlands not only preserve these picturesque scenes but also support sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Through careful management and community engagement, we can capture and protect the inherent beauty of wetlands for future generations. #WetlandConservation #Biodiversity #SustainableLiving

Happy World Wetlands Day! 🌱🐍🐀 Did you know that the Hotel Verde team are custodians of a wetland on our premises? We take care of this precious green space, and have put in a lot of work to rehabilitate it since we were awarded custodianship 💚 World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd to raise global awareness about the significance of distinct ecosystems. It also marks the date on which the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. Wetlands are of vital importance because they are: 💚 Biodiversity hotspots 💚 Freshwater stores 💚 Carbon sinks 💚 Source of livelihood This year's World Wetlands Day theme is "Wetlands and human wellbeing", highlighting the urgent need to prioritise wetland restoration. A good place to start is to educate yourself about these amazing green spaces & what they mean for our interconnected world.
