Applications are open for City of Hope's Intensive Course in Genetic Cancer Risk Assessment. To learn more and apply, visit https://bit.ly/4ceZPJX. Participants enrolled in the course will learn to: - Integrate cancer genetics and oncology knowledge into clinical practice - Apply skills commensurate with practitioner-level proficiency into the cancer risk assessment and case management process - Examine the value of hereditary cancer registries, cancer epidemiology and cancer prevention studies for patients and clinicians The deadline to apply is August 1, 2024. Alumni of the course are initiated as members of City of Hope’s Clinical Cancer Genomics Community of Practice, where they join a network of more than 1,800 clinicians and thought leaders across the U.S. for continuing support to grow their cancer risk assessment practices.

Better Tools for Better Estimates: How can we improve cancer data by finding better ways to handle missing data? Since cancer registries often face(d) the problem of missing data, we wanted to know how we can deal with this problem in an analytical way. Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer or bowel cancer, will soon be the leading cause of death from cancer in the under 50s. The increasing number of colorectal cancer cases in young adults worldwide is alarming, but there's positive news. In today's podcast, Dr Andy Chan shares encouraging information: colorectal cancer may be preventable, and there are practical steps you can take now to reduce your risk. Dr Chan is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of the clinical and translational epidemiology unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is fascinated by the gut microbiome and has been working closely with ZOE since the very early days. He is a lead researcher in the brand new Cancer Grand Challenges Team PROSPECT, working to better understand what leads to colorectal cancer, alongside ZOE's chief scientist, Dr Sarah Berry, and my scientific co-founder, Tim Spector. In this episode, we discuss how your diet can impact your cancer risk, the potential link between changes in your gut microbiome and colorectal cancer development, and preventive measures you can take today. #cancerresearch #epidemiology #oncology #health https://lnkd.in/gRDX5crG Epidemiologic cohorts of cancer etiology have contributed substantially to the current understanding of #cancer #risk #factors. Advancements in technologies could facilitate more precise, efficient and scalable assessments of emerging risk factors, ranging from ‘cells to society’. Because of the increasingly recognized necessity of addressing the roles of structural and social determinants of health, as well as the inclusion of underserved and understudied populations, a new generation of epidemiologic cohorts for cancer is warranted. Epidemiologic cohorts of cancer etiology involve following individuals over time to track the incidence of new cancers and other cancer-related outcomes. It is one of the most methodologically robust study designs for inferring causal associations between exposures and cancer. Because exposure is ascertained prior to cancer diagnosis, it is thus presumably unbiased by cancer occurrence or memory recall and therefore is an optimal approach for identifying cancer aetiological risk factors.

This powerful new analysis just published in Cancer highlights that the burden of cancer is on track to double in the coming decades, killing 10 million men each year by 2050. Prostate cancer will overtake lung cancer as the most deadly cancer in men if we don’t find better ways to diagnose and treat it. This underscores the value of our work at Lucida Medical Ltd to change this trajectory with better ways to screen, diagnose and treat cancers. Many congratulations to Dr. Habtamu Mellie Bizuayehu (PhD, Epidemiology) and co-authors for this research. 📣 BLACK FAMILY CANCER AWARENESS WEEK: Did you know that Black and African American people have higher death rates than all other racial/ethnic groups for many, although not all, cancer types? NCI-funded researchers are working to identify ways to improve outcomes for groups disproportionately affected by cancer. Their research efforts range from designing and implementing culturally appropriate health interventions, to improving access to care and connecting underrepresented populations to clinical trials, to examining biological and genetic factors that may explain differences in rates of fast-growing cancers. Researchers with NCI Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics have developed risk assessment tools for breast, colon, lung, thyroid and skin cancers that take specified racial/ethnic groups and age intervals into account. These tools are freely available to other researchers. ➡ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e67k_bay National Cancer Institute (NCI), FDA, The National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Health (NIH): Intramural Research Program (IRP) #CancerResearch #BlackFamCan #HealthEquity #Innovation

📊 Understanding US Cancer Trends 2024 🔍 Insights: The American Cancer Society's 2024 report projects 2,001,140 new cancer cases and 611,720 deaths in the U.S. 👏 Progress: Mortality rates have dropped since 1991, saving 4 million lives due to reduced smoking, early detection, and improved treatments. 🚨 Challenges: Six of the top 10 cancers, including breast, pancreas, and uterine corpus, show rising incidence rates. Young adults face increased rates in cervical and colorectal cancers. ⚖️ Disparities: Persistent gaps in mortality rates exist among ethnic groups, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions, especially for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Black individuals.
