My first internship wasn't quite as structured, but it definitely taught me a lot. Office colleagues are not family because office politics is more toxic than party politics. Don't ever make yourself taken for granted or you will end up losing faith in other and become slave forever there is neither any place nor respect for those who are shy and who cry. Be bold and brave. some seniors say alot about how they succeded but they won't tell you the story behind it. In corporate industry, beggars cannot be choosers. Here are my top learning: - I felt independent even though the amount I was earning is small - I learned about Teamwork - I learned to respect my boss even though she was rude - I got to know about office politics - I understood the importance of timee. - I understood that office collegues are not family.

As many of you likely already know, we at JBC take our intern program VERY seriously, and we have the retention to show for it: 10 (!) of our team members started as interns. For me, this is personal. I'm of the generation where interns were glorified work horses (I spent many a magazine internship getting lattes and walking dogs), where we weren't given real responsibilities — and certainly weren't compensated. Today, I'm incredibly proud that Melissa Conner and I have built the program I wish existed back in my intern days. So here's some unsolicited advice to companies looking to create a meaningful internship experience: 1. PAY THEM. According to recent data from Pay the Interns, the average cost of an unpaid internship for a student in the U.S. comes in at $6,800. Between housing, transportation, meals, and more, this number only increases depending on the city that you live in. Unpaid internships perpetuate inequality in America. All interns should be paid. Period. 2. Give them real work. You hired them, didn't you? So you should trust that you hired them to be a part of your company, which means expanding their workload beyond color-coding a rack of clothing. Let them sit in on meetings, review strategies, and give them the opportunity to ask questions. Every intern should walk away from the experience with a real understanding of the industry, not just a college credit. 3. Mentor them post-internship. Whether that means helping them find a great entry-level job or even hiring them when the time is right, it's important to remember that today's interns are tomorrow's leaders. Thank you Four Rivers Society for Human Resource Management for hosting me yesterday! Speaking to such an amazing group of leaders is always an honor. The topic was Internships. I've spoken about internships/co-ops from the perspective of a Director of Career Development, but yesterday I had the chance to share from a new perspective - a private company view. Trust me when I say, there is a big difference! Higher education professionals often only ask, "How can companies create the best experience for their interns?" However, companies have to expand the question to: "How can we create the best experience for our interns, given our current constraints?" At BFW/Marcum, we had some unique constraints this summer on our team's time, energy, and focus. Hosting 15 interns at multiple locations can be challenging enough; add moving our headquarters and launching a new logo to the mix and you create more tensions to manage. Luckily, we have a great team who rallied to provide a great internship experience! It started by developing 3 extraordinary touchpoints. The last one is today as we say thank you to our phenomenal interns at our Closing Session! Meet Wren Heron ‘24! Wren studied Communications and Media and minored in English and Asian Studies. We asked Wren about future plans and favorite parts at Naz: 1. What was your best experience at Naz? If I were to rank my best experiences, the top ones would be the time I’ve spent with the friends who I’ve made on campus. Nothing compares to the affinity we found with each other and the way we all supported each other in growing and learning about ourselves. 2. Who was your favorite professor? Dr. Phillip B. Guingona has had a tremendous impact on me as both a student and a person. His classes allowed me to pursue academic interests that I hadn’t previously had the opportunity to explore, meet my closest friends, and start learning more about myself. As a professor, Phillip truly values the lens that I bring to the classroom as an interdisciplinary student, and he has wholeheartedly supported my research and academic endeavors, even when I haven’t been confident in them myself. 3. What’s next? Summer internship at LáLew Public Relations- a woman and minority-owned public relations firm that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion in client work. After the summer, I hope to pursue a career path that allows me to engage in DEI work and push for more inclusive and accessible language.
