We, Far South Community Development Corporation, are proud to be part of several corridor planning initiatives that support the Chicago Transit Authority Red Line existing and proposed extension stations and the Transit Supportive Development Plan, including the 95th Street Corridor between Halsted and Cottage Grove and 111th Street - Roseland Community Medical District Station through the District's Master Plan with support and guidance from Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Thanks to The Chicago Community Trust, we are now able to develop a corridor plan for 103rd Street between Halsted and Michigan Avenue to support the proposed 103rd Street Red Line Extension Station. This plan will seek to develop strategies with the community on building density through mixed/multi-use developments, small businesses, open spaces, and creating a walkable and safe corridor. Additionally, this plan will help support the historic Langston Hughes STEM Elementary School, which is considered by Chicago Public Schools as an underutilized school with only a 64% utilization rate and will need some facility upgrades. And yes, it is another plan. If we do not plan, then we plan to fail. As a result of not having a plan, we have three dollar stores, a vacant school one block south of 103rd Street and State Street, no safety measures for the freight rail, a motel that has been a never-ending problem, and numerous vacancies on 103rd Street between Halsted and Michigan. If we do not plan our neighborhoods and set the standard, others will plan it for us and historically have not been in our favor. #BringingCommunitiesBackInitiative Katanya E. R. ICON is a community network based in the northeast inner city of Dublin with a long history of engagement with community development and social inclusion programmes and practices. Within the Northeast Inner City there is a large amount of very poor quality (and expensive) private rented accommodation. The ICON Community Development Project will focus on women and the right to adequate housing in the private rented sector in the northeast inner city. Women’s experiences of housing are different from those of men. This includes women’s pathways into and out of homelessness, interactions with housing services, and access to affordable and adequate housing standards, including the private market. Access to affordable and adequate housing is profoundly gendered and intimately linked to women’s poverty. Women’s disadvantaged position in the labour market, including part-time, precarious and/or low-paid employment and unpaid care work, has a direct impact on their housing. Market-dominated housing policies tend to disadvantage women, particularly female-led households. Closely linked to the gender pay gap, there is a gender property gap in terms of women’s ability to rent and buy homes, and the proportion of women’s income spent on rent. On average, women have lower incomes and less capital than men, and are therefore more likely to be renters or in less advantageous housing circumstances on the private market. This project is community based and community led. Social Capital in Community Development Project Design To design sustainable Community Development Projects, designers must grasp the factors that affect community needs. Designers must identify and harness certain core principles that lead to successful community development projects. Among the most important core principle is the Social Capital. Social Capital is that set of resources intrinsic to social relations. It comprises of intangible community assets such as norms, trust and, and networks.  Experts opine that the social capital concept is much broader than that of “I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine.” Community project designers will have to create opportunities for people to get to know each other and build new levels of trust through shared interests. In other words, communities may have strong bonding social capital but really need “bridging social capital” if they are going to prosper and increase their quality of life.

Community Development Approaches** 1. **Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)**: ABCD focuses on identifying and leveraging existing community strengths and assets rather than just addressing needs. It empowers residents to lead their development efforts. 2. **Participatory Development**: This approach involves active participation of community members in decision-making processes. It ensures that development initiatives align with the community's values and needs. 3. **Sustainable Development**: Sustainable community development aims to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It emphasizes environmental, social, and economic sustainability. **Challenges in Community Development** 1. **Inequality**: Disparities in income, access to education, and healthcare can hinder development efforts. 2. **Limited Resources**: Many communities face financial and resource constraints, making it challenging to implement development projects. 3. **Cultural Sensitivity**: Balancing modernization with the preservation of cultural identity can be complex. 4. **Political and Bureaucratic Obstacles**: Political instability and bureaucratic red tape can hinder progress. **Success Stories** Several communities around the world have achieved remarkable development outcomes through concerted efforts. For example, the Gaviotas community in Colombia transformed a barren landscape into a lush, sustainable forest through reforestation efforts. In India, the Aravind Eye Care System provides quality eye care to millions through an innovative, community-based model. In conclusion, community development is about fostering a holistic and sustainable improvement in the lives of community members. It requires collaboration, innovation, and a deep understanding of local needs and strengths. When done effectively, it can lead to stronger, more resilient communities with improved quality of life for all residents.

Community engagement Furthermore, community engagement not only enhances property values but also fosters a sense of belonging and social connectedness. According to a report by the Office for National Statistics, neighbourhoods with strong community ties experience lower crime rates and higher levels of well-being among residents. Additionally, a study by the University of Warwick found that every 10% increase in community cohesion is associated with a 3.5% increase in local economic growth. By actively involving local stakeholders in the development process, we not only create spaces that meet their needs but also contribute to the overall resilience and prosperity of the community. Through initiatives like inclusive design workshops and partnerships with local organizations, we're not just constructing buildings; we're nurturing vibrant, sustainable communities where everyone feels heard, valued, and at home.

Community development is crucial because it provides the base upon which a city may improve the quality of life for its residents. It builds solid, diversified communities with the capacity to draw in and retain talent, launch and expand enterprises, and resolve problems as they emerge. People will live longer, be happier and healthier, and be richer. Businesses will have a wider client base from which to sell their goods and services, and the city will generate tax revenue to maintain ongoing programs and pay down debt. When community development is successfully carried out, there is less crime, less social inequality, greater employment opportunities, a more skilled workforce, and fewer problems that affect inhabitants as a whole. A city's issues aren't always solved by community development, but they are lessened and growth potential are increased. Economic and corporate development suffer tremendously without community development. Collaboration between stakeholders who are committed to identifying and resolving issues within the community as well as exploring possibilities is necessary for successful community development. It necessitates participation and activity from those outside of the government (often referred to as the private sector).
