Preliminary 2024 net new construction in #RiverFalls is 3.58 percent! This number is comprised of a 7.60 percent increase in St. Croix County and a 1.15 percent increase in Pierce County. Hey folks, did you know... - One-third of all public roads in the U.S. are NOT paved - Rural roads are the lifelines of many counties... literally. - It costs an average of $2.6 million per lane mile to pave a "minor" local road in a rural area I grew up on a gravel road, and I can tell you, it's not easy living on unpaved rural roads. I've seen my dad go out on his tractor, grading our road during a blizzard to make it passable for the four families that lived there. I remember him coming in with red ears that were nearly frost bitten because he'd been out doing the county's job when they didn't have the time or money to help us. I've missed school because a rainstorm washed out our road with 18" ruts overnight, so the bus couldn't come pick us up. Other times when the road was impassable, the only way off our farm was to take our four-wheel drive truck out through a neighbor's field. I've known of people who have passed away or, conversely, who have birthed babies at home because ambulances couldn't make it down impassable rural roads during snowy or muddy seasons. Much of the land classified as buildable, within the City of Bellingham and its Urban Growth Areas (UGAs), is located in extremely challenging areas to build. Some of the land is in critical areas such as the Padden Creek watershed and steep slope areas, and much of it lacks the necessary capital facilities infrastructure, such as sewer and public utilities. Other areas also require expensive off-site road construction that may never be built as prerequisite conditions for any development. We know we need to be building about 825 homes per year to meet the demand but without a sufficient supply of buildable land where will we build? The City of New York is embarking on a significant $100 million Brooklyn coastal protection initiative that has been a decade in the making. The Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is set to award a $27 million contract to Liro Engineers Inc., a Long Island-based engineering and construction firm, to lead the efforts in safeguarding the Red Hook neighborhood. Red Hook, a community surrounded by water on three sides, suffered devastating damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The project, known as the Red Hook Coastal Resiliency Project, is a vital component of a broader strategy to fortify New York City’s waterfront against the growing threats of powerful storms and rising sea levels. This contract marks the first tangible step in realizing the Red Hook project, which was greenlit by the City Council in June. The DDC’s partnership with Liro Engineers Inc. will oversee the construction of flood barriers and gates designed to protect the neighborhood. While the city has yet to select the project's lead contractor, construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2025 and is expected to take three years to complete. Liro Engineers Inc. brings extensive experience to this project, having played a key role in the $1.5 billion East Side Coastal Resiliency Project, which aims to protect a 2.4-mile stretch of Manhattan. The firm has a strong presence in the northeastern United States and a proven track record of collaborating with the city on major infrastructure projects. Their past work includes the $55 million reconstruction of Times Square in 2013, the $61 million restoration of the historic High Bridge linking Manhattan and the Bronx in 2016, and a $100 million water main build-out under Broadway in 2015. 🌊 Water Industry News: Contract Agreement with Thames Water 🌊 Barhale has secured a £14.8 million contract with Thames Water to rehabilitate sections of the historic New River, one of London’s oldest water infrastructure assets. What you need to know: 🎯 This vital project will target areas in Hornsey and Waltham Cross to prevent leakage and extend the waterway's lifespan. 💪 They will be using a state-of-the-art Giken sheet piling system to strengthen the northern side of the waterway, minimizing noise and disturbance for the community. 🔎 Their innovative approach includes deploying pontoon barges for equipment access and silt excavation, ensuring they navigate the New River's constrained path efficiently. ⚒ At Waltham Cross, they will install sheet piling along a 1.1km stretch, reaching the impermeable London Clay to prevent water leakage. The gap between new and old piles will be filled with pea gravel for added stability. 🌍 Additionally, they are taking significant measures to protect the local ecology, including the use of a bubble curtain to prevent silt debris dispersal and to discourage fauna from approaching the works. 🤝 Barhale continues its relationship with Thames Water to collaborate on this essential refurbishment project, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of this historic waterway.
