I wish I figured this out sooner when I was in college - It's not that hard to stand out. Most schools have thousands, or tens-of-thousands of students. And most of them go to class (sometimes), clubs (sometimes), and hang out with their friends all the time. There are thousands of opportunities to stand out on college campuses, and once I started looking for them, I found that many more came my way. When you become known on campus as someone who does cool things and is helpful to others, others want you to help them do cool things, too. Here's four ways I stood out in college, that you can copy: 1. Built a hammock lounge on my campus. It was shockingly easy, and the school later built 9 more. Let me know if you want the pitch deck I used. 2. Ran a sustainable clothing company, using the school's entrepreneurship resources to help me get off the ground to sell on campus and online. 3. Got really good grades. This one is pretty self explanatory. I asked professors for help when I was struggling, and found they were always willing to explain the topics to me again. 4. Ordered $thousands of Chick-Fil-A for football tailgates as Treasurer of the student section athletic club. All these opportunities helped me stand out from all the other business students on campus and secure my internships. I can’t stop thinking about a recent comment that was left on a Linkedin post, critiquing the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) space and its negative impact on the education of student athletes. NIL legislation was passed in the summer of 2021, and it has undoubtedly changed what it means to be a student-athlete. Remember the era (pre-NIL) when it was illegal for these young adults to leverage their personal brand for entrepreneurial ventures, profit from their off-field-marketability, or engage in paid appearances, camps, or internships? NIL has created a world of professional and educational development opportunities for student-athletes. From brand management, to financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Will a Pricey Summer Program Help My High School Student Stand Out?     Summer Is the Time for Students to Put Values into Action Despite being the dead of winter, this is the time of year we encourage our high school sophomores and juniors to consider (and pursue) summer opportunities. Based on years of experience working with thousands of high school students, we know that deadlines for many interesting programs are fast approaching. We’re often asked for advice on the right summer program or activity that will boost a student’s chances at one college or another. Should students be jetting abroad for service projects and language immersion? Would a pricey pre-college course at a top university stand out on an application? Should a STEM-focused student spend the summer working to publish research? At College Bound Consulting, we know there isn’t one answer to the question “What’s the best summer activity?” Instead, we counsel our students to seek opportunities that authentically connect their values to action. Instead of spending time and/or money doing something simply because it looks good, students should devote that energy to an activity that connects with their values, sparks curiosity, and provides an opportunity for impact. We’re here to help guide students to find those opportunities. Sometimes, the right opportunity isn’t a formal program, but an independent project that taps into their curiosity and motivations. Students should also recognize the value of a summer job or internship. Some of our students’ strongest essays come from real work experience. For example, whether students are acting as hosts or bussing tables at a restaurant, they can take these roles to another level by observing the overall business. Being able to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and consider areas for improvement are the types of insights that may enhance the content of application essays. When it comes to summer activities, an experienced college counselor can help a student map out a strategy that puts values to action and showcases their intellectual curiosity, talents, and interests.
