We at CWA and CES have shared several stories regarding the use of public art to create more community within the built environment. We are proud to reside in an area of Michigan that considers this an important part of society. That, however, hasn't always been the case. As marketers, as disruptors, does it elevate or devalue the meaning of our messaging if a different light is shone on it? Is the act of disrupting the critical part of the message? What happens to an idea when it’s taken out of context? These are a few of the questions I’ve been pondering over the last few weeks… If the medium is the message, what happens when you move street art indoors? By definition, street art and the art of graffiti is an act of defiance in itself. A medium is used to stick it to “the man,” if you will. It was never intended to be commercialized or displayed in the sanitary settings of an art gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Or was it? Street art and the art of graffiti are having their moment, and it’s some long-overdue vindication for the kids of the counterculture. BEYOND THE STREETS “is a global, art-driven cultural and educational movement” and the passion project of curator Roger Gastman. Equal parts disruptor and equal parts historian Gastman has curated several gallery exhibitions paying homage to an art form once synonymous with vandalism. He celebrates “the mark-makers and rule-breakers, the agitators and instigators.” Beyond The Streets is art for the people by the people. After more than a few requests for extra time we have extended the Creative Croydon competition deadline by 1 week (to 19 June). Are you a young creative living, studying or working in Croydon? Are you aged 16-25? Would you like the chance to publicly exhibit your work across the town centre and be paid £500? If so, this competition is for you. The Croydonist, Croydon BID and local design studio 31% Wool are teaming up to deliver the third instalment of the Creative Croydon outdoor exhibition which will adorn lampposts across the centre of Croydon later this year. What to enter: Three pieces of art (in any static media) which respond to the theme ‘Happiness is’. (These could be pieces of art you have already created, or pieces you create specifically for the competition). New deadline: Wednesday 19 June, 5pm Format: The pieces of art will need to be supplied or cropped to portrait format (see full entry details) The selection process: All entries will be judged by a panel of established artists (who have shown work in previous Creative Croydon exhibitions). Five artists will be chosen for this year’s exhibition. What does it mean to be human today? That is the primary question on my mind at present. Which draws me particularly to art and ideas that feed my sense of connection to the richly human aspect of ourselves. All good art is a reminder that we are human of course (as long as it originates from human thinking, effort, will, and volition, and not generated by robots). Some art however, with its very subject and treatment, distinctly emphasises our human aspect. Such as this rich and evocative painting by Thomas Hart Benton that I came across a couple of days back on the Saint Louis Art Museum website. Not only it beautifully, visually highlights the human aspect but also the connection between humans and earth/nature. For our drift away from our human selves often coincides and co-relates with our drift from nature. Cradling Wheat, 1938 Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) Tempera and oil on board Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri, USA A group of lean, muscular field hands harvest grain on a sunny hillside. The rise and bend of their activity through the undulating contours of the land emphasizes the intimate relationship between man and nature. The artist, Missourian Thomas Hart Benton, was known for elevating the life of the working class, making their everyday labors appear heroic. Benton sought to capture images of grassroots America, which he felt was rapidly disappearing due to industrialization. Certainly Cradling Wheat is nostalgic: the cradle scythe used by the farmer on the left to cut the grain would have been old-fashioned by the 1930s.
