Here’s to 3 years with The Van Aken District! It’s hard to believe this much time has passed since joining the District. If I had to list all the things that I have and continue to learn, I’d run out of room on this status update. Let’s face it, no one wants to read all of that! All that being said, if you were to tell me 3 years ago, having never worked in the field of property management, I’d be doing what I’m doing now, you would get more than just a crazy look. However, life works in mysterious ways. While career growth is not as simple as X+Y = Z (at least it’s never been that way for me), being open to and embracing new challenges and having a growth mindset has allowed me to learn new skills and find an industry that I enjoy working in every day. I wish I understood that mentality much earlier on in life. To say that the journey has been anything short of special would be an understatement. Beyond appreciative to be able help create a destination that promotes gathering with friends and loved ones, supporting locally owned businesses, and creating a place that builds memories for all those who visit. Here’s to the next 3 years and beyond! #thevanakendistrict #growthmindset #workanniversary #propertymangement

Guest Experience score may not show up on your p&l report… but this number has ALWAYS been our most important KPI at South Block WHY? Because the guest experience score can be telling of what pivots or changes you may need to stay on top of… BEFORE they become problems and result in lower p&l performance. HOW? Put people over profits. Take care of your TEAM so they they will WANT to take care of your guests. Put your people first and watch your profits soar! 🚀 #buildingblocks
✨ Let's hear it for Asher, our head coach at South Block Old Town. In Q2 their store earned one of the highest guest experience scores for the company, kale yeah! 👏 Old Town is one of our busiest locations yet Asher and their team prioritize our guests day in and day out. As we say, small acts have big impacts and we're so grateful to be a part of such a supportive community in Old Town. Psst...If you want to be a part of the team and deliver exceptional guest experiences with us, check out our careers page here: https://lnkd.in/gxij-9De

International Zoo Consultant / Zoo & Safari Park project consultant / Zoo Director / Independent Zoo Auditor helping with most zoo problems, giving an unbiased report.
In a zoo or safari park, one of the “must have qualities” a Director or Operations manager needs, is not just the ability to build and inspire a great team that will help your park reach its vision and intended purpose, but also he/she must be able to hang on to that team. And one of the ways to hang on to your team is give them the freedom to produce great work, because it makes no sense to recruit staff with experience and skills and then micromanage their work. Micromanaging your team will only affect your team's morale and in the process create a very dysfunctional park to work in. When your park has the staff with the skills and experience to not just get the job done, but to get it done to a high level, you as the director need to give them the freedom to be creative and to be the very best version of themselves, while knowing that you are there in the background to support and guide them if they need help. When a director understands that they don't need to be the smartest person in the room, and allows their team to demonstrate their skills and experience, that team will then start to pull of great feats in their area of expertise, benefiting the park and those who work there. timhusband2005@gmail.com

International Zoo Consultant / Zoo & Safari Park project consultant / Zoo Director / Independent Zoo Auditor helping with most zoo problems, giving an unbiased report.
Being a leader or mentor to others in a zoo or safari park isn’t always as simple as it looks or as some may think it is. At times you may need to stand up for what is right and that may mean that at times you may need to disagree with the parks Director or Operations manager. In a safe environment this should not be a problem if you are standing up for what is right and not just being disagreeable just for the sake of being a thorn in the side of management. The times where a strong leader should disagree with the parks Director or Operations manager is when their decisions are not ethical and moral or when the other team members need a voice of reason. No one is saying that this is easy to do and in an unsafe environment it can be treacherous to your career particularly if the management have little understanding on what is right and wrong or are to proud to accept that they are wrong. In this type of situation it is really up to each individual to decide for themselves what they must do, as everyone’s personal situation is different. But the fact is that if a zoo or safari park Director or Operation Manager can’t allow team members to question unethical decisions then they need to be removed or for the sake of the park be taken under the wing of someone that understands the ethics of running a park and be mentored until things have changed for the better.
