Why did the villagers refuse to live in the beautiful homes made for them? Some years ago, somewhere in the world, a beautiful rehabilitation program was shaping up. The team was trying to design a colony of modern, self-contained homes for the families that got badly affected by floods. The government, the urban planners and the NGOs worked hard and completed building 50 homes for the affected families, in just two years. Everybody was excited to see how the villagers would respond to the beautiful houses with all the facilities, clean toilets, curated walkways and the plantation around the colony. When the villagers were invited to receive the keys to their homes, they were overwhelmed. With a lot of excitement they all went there and saw the project. To the government’s surprise, they all refused to live in those homes. Everyone, who worked hard to complete the project was shocked to hear that. The villagers were so afraid of the new homes, that they just wanted to run away from that place and were ready to live in their homes with broken walls. Why did the villagers refuse to live in those self contained homes, where they had modern facilities, hygienic toilets, free spaces, and gardens? What was the fear about? Any guesses? Happy Friday Everyone! I was thinking today about the impact of what we do here at Manchester Grows and I wanted to dive a little bit into the history of community gardens. The first community gardens in the United States originated in Detroit, MI in the 1890's during the economic recession. When they first started, these were called "Vacant Lot Gardens" and they were used in a very similar vein to the ones we still use today. "The first community gardens in the United States were vacant lot gardens started during the economic recession of the 1890s. Detroit was the first city in the United States to create an extensive municipally sponsored urban gardening program using vacant lots in the city. Mayor Hazen Pingree started the program in response to the economic recession that began in 1893, which left many of the city’s industrial laborers, particularly recent Polish and German immigrants, unemployed and hungry. Known as “Pingree’s Potato Patches,” the program provided unemployed workers with plots of land on vacant city lots, seeds, and tools, and instructions (printed in three languages) on how to cultivate gardens. While Pingree’s plan could not fulfill all the demand, it was successful in alleviating some of the hunger and poverty in Detroit. The Detroit Plan was so successful that other cities from Boston to San Francisco developed similar plans" If you're interested in learning more about Community Gardens and their Historical significance, I've linked an article below. Always fun to have a play with new solutions in new situations. Sometimes it's very public and with huge ramifications. Like the next invite for beers if I kill their lawns! It is satisfying to take what you have learned over the years and have confidence in a solution without all of the normal data. What however won't change will be the review processes and trying to get this solution right over the next 6-12 months. #alwayslearning #takingthebsoutofbiology
Annual lawn renovation done, then add our lawn trial solutions, small amount of fert, and then some water. The photo on the right was taken 3 weeks ago and the one on the left last week. To say the owner is very happy is an understatement. Lucky we have some mates where we can try out some ideas, whilst we continue to perfect some new solutions. #lawnluv #alwayslearning #alwaysinnovating
