🎭 Notting Hill Carnival: Safety in Focus 🎭 The safety of major events is always a topic of significant interest to crowd professionals and recent discussions about Notting Hill Carnival highlight the complexity of delivering Europe's biggest street party. Thank you to Working With Crowds for bringing this important story to the forefront. A Police Federation report described the event as a ‘war zone,’ sparking debate over how best to manage its unique risks. With hundreds of thousands of attendees, Carnival brings together vibrant culture, music, and community—but also high risks, including large crowds, alcohol, drugs, and gang activity. Eric Stuart QPM, former UKCMA Chair, shared his perspective: “This event is high risk… it needs very careful planning and detailed delivery. This only happens when partners can trust each other and work closely together.” Eric also expressed confidence in the Metropolitan Police Service’s MO6 team, who work directly with Carnival organisers and local authorities to plan the event. As professionals in crowd management, these conversations remind us of the critical importance of partnership, planning, and trust in delivering safe, inclusive events. Let’s keep the dialogue going. The Night Time Industries Association. (NTIA) has just issued a stark warning: UK Clubs could vanish by 31.12.29. With 37% of clubs gone since March 2020—3 clubs per week— 150 Clubs per year - if this trend continues, we’re facing the Last Night Out before nightclubs disappear from our culture forever. Clubs are more than venues—they’re cultural landmarks that foster creativity, community, and the heartbeat of our towns and cities across the UK. But also a benchmark of nightlife culture showing the fragility of the sector.. Here’s how you can help: Sign the petition and encourage others to do the same: https://lnkd.in/edzTpXRh We’re asking the government to: Provide long-term financial support to help nightclubs survive. Grant cultural protection for iconic venues, recognising them like galleries or museums. Reform policies (like licensing and planning laws) to support the industry. This week's blog is all about the ups and downs of running outside bars. It was definitely an interesting period in my business and one that I learnt loads from doing. But it is a risky venture, and I have recently read that lots of small businesses are carefully considering whether festivals such as Glastonbury are worth doing, because pitch fees and commissions have risen so much. You can read my blog here - https://lnkd.in/dmqJccRP #outsidebars #pubdoctors #lessonsinhospitality #reflectionsofareluctantlandly #diversification

Ask for Angela I agree with the message, that venues should actively promote the safety of their guests and have measures/schemes in place to promote safety in the night time economy. I agree with my colleague Luke Elford's comments that "Ask for Angela" isn't the only measure that can be used to promote safety in our night-time venues. However, I would advocate this scheme as a useful tool to be implemented by venues. The data from this exercise is important, to the name and shame premises is an irresponsible and unhelpful use of the captured information. A more productive use, would be to notify the venues directly so they can identify their pain points to address those areas (i.e. with further training). If a venue does identify any weak points, we would encourage them to seek assistance from licensing experts or local authorities. https://lnkd.in/e3fA5g2q
