What a horrible idea! This has been tried before and has usually ended up in disaster and scandal. Just a few examples are: LAPD - Rampart Scandal, Miami PD - River Cops Scandal, Memphis PD - Tyre Nichols Scandal, and Washington DC Metro Police - Rush To Hire Scandal. Just another example of Cities and Law Enforcement Agencies not paying attention to history and making the same mistakes over and over again. When you hire unqualified and unsuited people for Law Enforcement positions you are doing a disservice to the profession, your agency, your officers, and your community. Never lower your hiring standards! Honoring Our Protectors: Celebrating National Police Week 2024 🚓 This week, we honor the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe – our police officers. National Police Week (May 12th – 18th, 2024) is a time to recognize their commitment, sacrifice, and unwavering service. Why are police officers vital? - Maintaining Law and Order: They respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and ensure public safety through their proactive presence. - Building Trust and Community Relations: Good police work builds bridges between law enforcement and the communities they serve. - Selfless Service: Officers put their lives on the line every day to protect us, often facing challenging and dangerous situations. Let's show our appreciation for our police force: - Express gratitude to an officer you know. A simple "thank you" can go a long way in showing your appreciation. - Support community policing initiatives. Programs that foster positive interactions between police and residents benefit everyone. - Advocate for fair and just policing practices. A strong police force requires a commitment to community trust and accountability. #NationalPoliceWeek #ThankAPoliceOfficer #LawEnforcement

Trust and confidence in the police are crucial for effective law enforcement and maintaining public order, but in recent years, there have been significant declines in public trust in both the U.S. and U.K. Strategies such as enhancing procedural justice in police interactions, adopting community policing approaches, and reforming police culture from a "warrior" to a "guardian" mindset are essential for rebuilding trust and confidence between police forces and the communities they serve. Even as Donald Trump relies on unprecedented support from Black and Latino voters, he is embracing policies that would expose their communities to much greater police surveillance and enforcement. The policies that Trump is pledging to implement around crime and policing in a second presidential term would reverse the broad trend of police reform that accelerated after the murder of George Floyd, four years ago today. Trump has endorsed a suite of proposals that would provide cities with more funds to hire police officers; pressure officials in major cities to employ more aggressive policing tactics, such as “stop and frisk,” in high-crime neighborhoods; and strengthen legal protection for law-enforcement officers accused of misconduct.

The prevalence of school police departments has more than doubled over the past two decades to a point where school district police departments account for nearly 20% of all sworn school resource officers in the country. What happened in Uvalde should have been a tipping point to prove further that police, including school police departments, do not keep students safe. Advancement Project’s A Cop is A Cop report is a comprehensive guide outlining why the increasing trend of school police departments only creates violence, not safety.
our new brief, 'A Cop is A Cop: the rise of school district police departments and why they must be dismantled,' documents the alarming, rapid growth of school districts setting up their own police forces -- disproportionately policing Black and Latine students. These are not "special" police. Instead of safety, these school district police departments embed surveillance, harm, and violence into schools, criminalizing and assaulting students in these districts. LA and Oakland organizers are leading the way in reversing this trend.

Increasing Police Presence. The community’s racial and ethnic identity were unrelated to support for increased police presence, while perceived neighborhood disorder was related to greater support for police presence. It was also found that neighborhood disorder, social cohesion, and informal social control were indirectly related to support for increased police presence through perceptions of police legitimacy and fear of crime.
