What a horrible idea! This has been tried before and has usually ended up in disaster and scandal. Just a few examples are: LAPD - Rampart Scandal, Miami PD - River Cops Scandal, Memphis PD - Tyre Nichols Scandal, and Washington DC Metro Police - Rush To Hire Scandal. Just another example of Cities and Law Enforcement Agencies not paying attention to history and making the same mistakes over and over again. When you hire unqualified and unsuited people for Law Enforcement positions you are doing a disservice to the profession, your agency, your officers, and your community. The NYPD is the most antiquated police system in the world. It’s hardly something leadership should be proud of. The commission should take a hard look at other police departments around the world to see how the most effective leadership works. Not only are the policies outdated and officer pay hardly enough to live nowadays, effective communication-agency-wide is poorly communicated and organized. Equipment that is so old, uses unclear radios, and needs a massive upgrading too. Recruitment is at an all-time low due to a poor morale and NYPD image. NYC leadership prefers to party-down at discos and clubs (Mayor Adam’s) rather than train and manage a failing police force. I hope they take a good look at their own.

Great tips on putting together a module on p civilian police oversight from the Reducing Crime podcast.
Want to use a podcast in your teaching? Interested in #civilian #oversight of #policing? In the first of an occasional series on how to integrate the Reducing Crime podcast into your classes, here are a couple of episodes and a reading recommendations so you can easily create a module/class on - in this case - civilian oversight. Don't forget that you can get transcripts of every episode at reducingcrime.com/podcast. If you are an instructor or lecturer, and you want multiple choice questions for every episode, just send me a DM. #Civilian #Oversight Civilian oversight of law enforcement is a mechanism that builds greater trust between the community and law enforcement by promoting accountability, transparency, and legitimacy. But it can be a contentious area for police executives, and there are many different approaches to civilian oversight. 1. Reducing Crime podcast episode #26 (Hans Menos) At the time of the interview, Hans Menos, Ph.D., LCSW was leading Philadelphia's Police Advisory Commission, the civilian oversight agency for the Philadelphia Police Department. They provided recommendations on how to improve policing in the city, by analyzing the policies, practices, and customs of the Philadelphia Police Department. We talked about the challenges of police oversight, Black Lives Matter, use of force, and different ways to move police accountability forward. #SoundCloud: https://lnkd.in/eaGNRAgN #Apple: https://lnkd.in/e87FKJD9 #Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eh2Hzd9y 2. Reducing Crime podcast episode #43 (Walter Katz) At the time of the interview, Walter Katz was the Vice President of Criminal Justice for Arnold Ventures. We cover his background as a public defender, his work as Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, police oversight, public safety budgets and the role of civilian policy makers, police use of force, and minimizing police involved shootings. #SoundCloud: https://lnkd.in/eqGay8US #Apple: https://lnkd.in/emgjZ_CP #Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eT6XzKaS 3. A new study from Ian T. Adams, Ph.D. and colleagues in the last month, has a current literature review and study on police leaders' perspective on oversight called "Police reform from the top down: Experimental evidence on police executive support for civilian oversight". Fortunately it is open access: https://lnkd.in/ebTH3hWm 4. You could assign your students selected parts of this useful #COPS #Office publication from 2021, Vitoroulis, McEllhiney, and Perez. Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement: Report on the State of the Field and Effective Oversight Practices. https://lnkd.in/eyWSmVEm
