'Microtransit options can work well in less-dense areas and suburbs where few other transit options are available and where ridership is sparse. However, the per-mile cost of these services can be prohibitive to some agencies and, some have argued, does not scale well.' It definitely works well for connecting smaller communities where a fixed-route service would just run empty most of the time (low efficiency). DRTs or microtransit help develop a localized, adaptive transportation system that works for areas not cost-effectively served by normal fixed-route services. #sharedmobility #ondemand #drt #microtransit #publictransit #operationalcosts #profitablegrowth #viability https://lnkd.in/gev6w28e

I think most people working in rail would welcome a return to "how do we improve services to encourage usage of trains?" Looking at the needs of particular segments is a great start - interestingly, I think most of the suggested initiatives would be welcomed by a much wider pool of rail passengers. And clearly, the fundamental needs around reliability etc apply to everyone. #passengerexperience #rail #inclusivedesign #experiencedesign #transport #railway

Growing businesses and innovation with social infrastructure | Strategic thought facilitator | Non- Executive Director | Connector
⏲ Going back in time to make the last mile greener I hold my hand up. I have been there as the grumpy onlooker when an empty train goes past and you just tut, roll your eyes and ask why do they all all those carriages for a handful of people? (There is a valid reason to discuss another day - or just inbox me to find out why). However this business plan by Intercity Rail freight partnering with rail operators to move high value good when there is spare capacity on passenger services is a genius move. The sharp eyed among you would say that this was done up until the 1960's anyway so it's nothing new. But there are time we need to look back to see what has worked and can it be adapted to today and tomorrow. For this idea to be taken to the next level and fit into 2024 it needs to tie in with train stations to maximize full environmental and road safety benefits. Imagine if rail stations in urbanised area's were adapted and designed to accommodate a network of sustainable last mile delivery with green lightweight vehicles taking high value good to homes, restaurants and business? Why?: 🏥 Safer city roads 🌤 Cleaner air 💶 Grows the gig economy 💱 Commercial revenue for the rail industry 📤 Quicker deliveries for the last mile (after all stations are usually slap bang in the center). 💪 It's not easy as there needs to be joined up thinking between Rail infrastructure managers, train operating companies, logistics companies, freight forwarding companies, local authorities and specialist innovators to make this happen.
