I'm excited to share that I successfully presented our paper, "Party without a cake? Onto an inter-modal HitchHike logistics platform for passengers and products transportation", at the Context-aware, Autonomous and Smart Architecture (CASA) Workshop, co-located with the 18th European Conference on Software Architecture (ECSA) on September 3, 2024, in Luxembourg. Special thanks to Mohammed Fahad Ali, who did a fantastic job presenting our work. We’re proud to announce that Make a BIM, a Finnish #PropTech startup, has secured pre-seed funding to scale their operations and advance the digitalisation of aging building stock, starting with Europe! 🌍 Founded by Leo Salomaa, Ville-Matti Tanninen, and Jami Valorinta in 2023, Make a BIM is leveraging #AI to convert 2D drawings into Building Information Models (#BIM) in minutes. This tech reduces repetitive, manual labour by experts and ensures compliance with new regulations, such as the Energy Performance of Building Directive (#EPBD) set to take effect by 2026. Innovate UK, a division of UK Research and Innovation, has announced a new round of funding through the Launchpad program for marine and maritime projects in the Great South West. The initiative will involve a collaboration with Cornwall Council, Plymouth City Council, and Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, with a total investment of up to £3 million for innovative projects. This funding aims to support the UK Government's objectives outlined in the Levelling Up White Paper and will focus on projects that align with the goals of the Great South West, including achieving net zero targets and boosting key regional marine and maritime markets. Businesses in the region will have the opportunity to enhance their innovation efforts with this funding, both during and after the project. The competition is divided into two strands: Launchpad: marine and maritime, Great South West - Round 2 Minimal Financial Assistance (MFA) and Launchpad: marine and maritime, Great South West - Round 2 Collaborative Research and Development (CR&D). Applicants must ensure that their proposals meet the criteria specified for the competition and are submitted to the correct funding strand. Due to limited funding availability, not all projects may receive financial support even if they score highly. These past weeks the topic of "best practices for tech adoption within construction" was part of so many conversations that I wanted to share a few thoughts from my perspective being on the Tech side. There is of course no one-size-fits-all playbook, but some common traits I see from clients adopting GAMMA AR (and other tech successfully) seem to be pretty effective: 1. Understand your need, don’t adopt something because it’s cool 2. Question the vendor’s claims and look beyond the sales pitch 3. Check for scalability and integration 4. Test and validate in the real world 5. Make the business case right 6. Evaluate continually While points 1 - 4 are just common sense (and everybody is talking about it), I'm surprised how many people get #5 wrong, even though that's the actual decision driver. Some companies have figured it out, some might rather be better off acknowledging own limitations in this area and ask people for help who have seen tons and can cut through the noise like Erin, Nate, Jamie, Dace. The last point is something that is especially striking to me. A process for continuous tech evaluation including deployed and discarded solutions is the main differentiator of true construction innovators imho. Needs evolve, tech evolves, users' skills evolve. Every day you continue using a solution is not "maintaining the status quo", it's an active choice of not taking something new (same as holding a specific stock in your portfolio). In other words: keeping your tech stack is an active decision that "this is the best thing out there for the skills of my team and tasks they are up against". Of course switching solutions up too frequently is economical nonsense that will probably end up in a mutiny of the field workers on top. And I admit to all the points about "Projects are burning, people are old, there is no time nor wish to learn, we are happy they are at least using this or that. There is tech fatigue, etc". I'm not saying that it's easy, just saying that getting out of a bad relationship is difficult, especially if nothing seems to be actually broken and it's just a bunch of annoying minor stuff that might be piling up. Cutting the ropes always seems hard. But aren't there a gazillion nice hollywood blockbusters about how liberating it is to cut through those ropes? That's not for nothing. How many times did I see customers use legacy tech, struggling with problems that are solved since long times in other solutions and actually add to the workload of the professionals instead of making things better? And by the way, that's the type of mentality that allows some tech providers not to pay attention to market trends, not to improve their tech, feeling like once they sold to a customer, the deal is locked for good. Like in a relationship: getting married shouldn't mean that you have to stop putting in the effort and hitting the gym from time to time.

Amazing news: SINTEF - consortia won three out of the 40 Pathfinder projects awarded by the European Innovation Council, aiming to promote "breakthrough deep tech projects with a high degree of scientific and technological ambition and risk". Impressive, in a race with more than 1100 applicants! 🥇🥇🥇 The three projects all draw on the combination of deep generic technology expertise and domain insight from areas as diverse as free form architecture, additive manufacturing and medical diagnostics through microelectromechanical systems. The projects will involve researchers from three of our institutes; SINTEF Digital, SINTEF Manufacturing and SINTEF Community. 🤝🔬🌉 As we discussed in our recent dinner, the competition is fierce, but the impact can be very high in order to accelerate the necessary innovation in Europe, Michiel Scheffer, Anita Krohn , Anne Kjersti Fahlvik and Håkon Haugli. 💡🇪🇺 Since reaping the rewards from this kind of early phase research often takes in the form of startups, the importance of a well functioning ecosystem for startups in Norway is critical.
