【RTHK Radio 1 Climate Watcher Interview: Resource #Circularity in #MICE Industry】 Here comes another episode with the RTHK Radio 1 program Climate Watcher featuring the PSLB project, supported by The Hongkong Bank Foundation – though we are continuing to dive deep into the application of resource circularity, this time the focus was on the MICE industry. From corporate conferences, product launch events, and forums to trade shows and exhibitions, albeit different in scale and format, these events are all part of the MICE industry and the amount of manpower and resources required are substantial. In particular, booth designs, food, and logistics are the biggest contributors to carbon emissions from MICE activities.   In this episode, apart from highlighting our work in launching the Practical Guidebook and implementing the resource circularity framework in our book launch event, for audiences to understand our role as academia, we have also invited Amy So from Informa Markets to share about their ‘Better Stand’ program, how it has successfully motivated raw space exhibitors and their contractors to build their stands with reusable structures instead of single-use materials. Awesome experiences this week with the ladies of WEN at the 30th Anniversary Conference. So many takeaways both from a perspective of personal growth and development as well as getting more informed about the business and where it is now and the challenges to where it Is headed. I think we all have heard of the Golden rule but are you familiar with the Platinum Rule which is to treat people the way they want to be treated. This goes along with allowing people to be their authentic selves. Two other nuggets that I have heard before but are worth repeating. Your network is your net worth and what is FEAR – False Evidence appearing Real. One of the recurring comments in many of the sessions was Fail Fast. Do Something and if it fails, adjust and keep moving. Change is upon us, and some things are put in play that are not proven, they may be stop gaps or what works for right now as we continue to get to where we want or need to be. But you won’t know until you start. Some interesting principles to help breakthrough when you are stuck or maybe unsure of what’s next. One that we don’t always utilize that was titled Enlist a Motley Crew, which is a diverse group with varying opinions and life experiences that can bring different points of view; as well as Check Your Edge which is to step out of your comfort zone use that Motley Crew and just START. Some of the sessions gave more insight into the challenges that Energy Transition brings with it and gave a clearer understanding of some of the informational pieces that are coming across in various emails or Newsletters and Viva Engage.               Big Investments               Effective Implementation               Increased Innovation               Global Trade               Industry Involvement               Impacts of Regulation Energy Transition is Global Decision Making. It requires engaging and partnering with others on many levels and collaboration across various industries. Working with developing and underdeveloped countries to ensure affordability and sustainability.

We're doubling down on our commitment to harnessing science, technology, and innovation to reinforce the 2030 agenda by delivering practical solutions that promote sustainability, resilience, and innovation contributing to a circular economy. On the (repurposed) ferry back to the city after the final day of the Climate Change and Business Conference, I was thinking about business models… I’ve said it before and the conference once again reinforced it to me: - the why is unequivocal (science) - the what is well known (solutions) - the how is the job to be done (strategy, business models, financing to scale the solutions) And there were some interesting business model themes that came through for me during the conference. The potential business model archetypes that seem to be growing in importance are those centred around: - repurposing (capabilities and assets) - aggregating (spacial and temporal) - standardising (supply and demand) - disintermediating (scientific and digital innovation) - collaborating (intra and inter-industry) ***edit from the bike into work*** Swap: - collaborating (intra and inter-industry) *necessary across all archetypes* For: - smoothing (volatility/turbulence and uncertainty) *** I think a lot of these emerge from the addressing the challenges and capitalising on the advantages associated with our scale and couple nicely with a focused strategy around key niches, particularly in the global context. On the evening of August 31st, 2023, two leaders in their respective industries met again after a decade without seeing each other. Their stories go back to when the International Power Association (IPA) was born in San Diego, California, more than 30 years ago. At that time, Miguel Aldrete, assistant engineer to the founder of the Association, and Jaime Ventura, owner of a company that worked on power quality projects in South America, forged a friendship and a professional connection that would mark their lives. The two had just had a casual dinner that turned into an unexpectedly productive technological and marketing summit. Miguel, who today leads the International Power Association as its president and new owner, has risen with great success in the world of power quality and reliability, representing prestigious international brands in these areas and is the author of "The 3 C's", a book to solve electrical and power quality problems, especially in Latin America, with a focus on the Mexican market. On the other hand, Jaime, who has also gained international recognition as an expert in energy quality, has oriented his career towards energy-saving solutions with solar and LED lighting. This has been achieved through an innovative system, created by him, called the CI Integration Coefficient. His approach is focused on solving electrical problems and embraces the cause of environmental sustainability, combating CO2 emissions that threaten our planet. What started as a friendly dinner turned into a brainstorming session. The conversation expanded even further, foreseeing the incorporation of predefined solutions, and taking advantage of the CI. This versatile approach could include Asian and American products, diversifying the offer and ensuring more sustainable projects with a higher benefit-cost ratio. A dinner that started as a casual encounter turned into a 3-hour summit. Friendship, experience, and passion for long-lasting projects took over the evening. When the restaurant eventually closed, the two pledged to join forces to begin possible evaluations of some products, such as power conditioners and batteries from Asia, as a first step, since, according to Miguel, in the current annual plans of the IPA, solar energy and energy efficiency are still under review as they are now concentrated on their main market niche of power quality. The photo that captures that summit shows two men in their middle years but with the excitement and joy of young adventurers.
