💵 Hochschild Mining PLC's new $200M sustainability-linked loans (SLL) are a step in the right direction towards broader, non-carbon KPIs. Wiles Kase stresses the importance of expanding SLLs to include non-carbon KPIs like #water management, #community development, and #tailings, shifting the focus back to local stakeholders. In an op-ed for Mining Magazine, Wiles discusses how transparency around these KPIs can bridge the existing 'trust deficit' for key stakeholders. “Carbon is king when it comes to ESG. However, in mining, carbon might be more of a distraction than a centerpiece.” Provoking thoughts from Wiles Kase in an op-ed for Mining Magazine last year - and more relevant today than ever. #Sustainability KPIs that link to #water and waste have a real-time impact on stakeholders, and these can’t be overlooked in the pursuit of #sociallicense. Miners need to address more than just carbon in sustainability-linked loans (SLLs), particularly as these become more common in the context of the energy transition. Read more here:

https://lnkd.in/g7vjYSYh Excited to share an op-ed I wrote in Mining Magazine about sustainability-linked loans (SLLs) in the mining sector. Advocating for miners to strike a better balance between carbon and more local elements of ESG (water, community prosperity, pollution, and so on) when structuring SLLs. Somewhat counterintuitive—this is critical for the energy transition, as I tease out in the piece, even if appears to divert attention from mining’s carbon initiatives. Banks that lend to miners might even manage their SLL exposure across distinct portfolios focused on global vs local sustainability.

Green energy transition is threatened by a lack of mining investment. This article provides some good facts and thoughts why mining investment delivers great returns for both your portfolio an the climate - some highlights of the article: ⚒️ "The demand for metals and materials is poised to surpass all prior estimates" ⚒️ "BHP, Rio Tinto, Glencore, Anglo American and Vale have an average price to forward earnings ratio of 8.5 times versus 18.5 for the S&P 500" ⚒️ " Many investors are still wary of the sector because of its inherently cyclical nature and since the industry squandered billions of dollars on ambitious projects [...] during the 2000s. [...] After [...] the sector’s chief executives have focused on discipline." The article might be behind a paywall (FT seems to toggle this)
