Panellists at an event hosted in the UK House of Lords called on Anglo American to "answer for its toxic legacy" in Kabwe, Zambia. The company was involved with the Kabwe lead mine from 1925 to 1974. A class action suit has been filed in South Africa against Anglo by claimants who say that the lead poisoning that they have suffered was a result of the mining operations. Rare earth elements (REEs) are notoriously tricky to separate from each other, and the process often yields radioactive by-products like uranium and thorium, which require specialised handling. Penn State University scientists revealed yesterday a new development in #REE separation, using a bacterial protein called LanD. This protein as the unique ability to bind to light REEs such as #neodymium and #praseodymium. Has machine learning found a solution to US #lithium demands? A new study using 'novel methodology' from the US Geological Survey and the Arkansas state geologist's office has found between five and 19 million tons of lithium reserves beneath south west Arkansas. If recoverable, the reserves would "cover current estimated US lithium consumption" and would "meet projected 2030 world demand for lithium in car batteries nine times over". A strong set of results yesterday from Freeport-McMoRan, one of the world's largest #copper miners, came after strong demand for power cables and building wire associated with substantial investment in electrical infrastructure and AI data centres. Chief executive Kathleen Quirk said that its "high potential innovative leach technologies are delivering results", adding that the company has "several ongoing initiatives to add scale and low cost copper volumes" in its Americas business. British manufacturer ATHERTON MATERIALS HANDLING LIMITED recently installed a Bunting Suspension Electro Magnet at a calcium carbonate quarry in Melton, aiming to improve productivity by reducing the frequency of metal detection trips. The newly-installed equipment will eliminate ferrous metal contaminants before they reach the quarry's metal detector, minimising downtime and safeguarding the quarry's processing machinery. This week, Mercedes-Benz AG officially opened its lithium-ion battery (LiB) recycling plant with an "integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process" in Kuppenheim, Germany. The plant was developed with Primobius, a joint venture between German plant and mechanical engineering company SMS group and Australian process technology developer Neometals Ltd. With an expected recovery rate of more than 96 per cent, the car manufacturer said the recovered materials, including #lithium, #nickel and #cobalt, will be "suitable for use in new batteries". "On the rotary drill side, we are seeing a 30-35% percentage of the total demand for electric," Sandvik's global product manager for rotary drills Nellaiappan Subbiah told Mining Magazine. But the drill manufacturer's innovations extend beyond electrification, into automation and data. Sandvik is the equipment provider for three sites that operate with a completely autonomous surface fleet, including surface boom drills and #rotarydrills operating together from the same seat, operated from a remote control centre.
