Hear from someone in your community about living with sight loss. As part of the presentation, ambassadors share their stories and cover topics such as blindness etiquette, the importance of accessibility and inclusion, how to use assistive technologies, the purpose of white canes, the role of guide dogs, local CNIB programs and services, and more! By learning more about blindness, you will help dispel myths and challenge misconceptions to ensure Calgary is a more inclusive community where everyone can live, learn, work and play without barriers. During his trip to Finland, our Training Manager, John, who is deafblind, was impressed by the exceptional support and services offered to deafblind people. Countries like Finland, exemplify a society where deafblind people have the #RightToBeSeenAndHeard. Looking ahead, it's clear that Scotland can draw valuable lessons from Finland's example. Currently lacking a formal definition for deafblindness, Scotland overlooks a crucial opportunity to address the unique challenges faced by the deafblind community. This gap can result in inequalities across various aspects of life, including education, employment, healthcare, and overall wellbeing. The time to act is now. By formally recognising deafblindness through the Nordic lens and implementing tailored support systems, Scotland can ensure early identification and intervention, paving the way for a more inclusive society. Let's take inspiration from Finland and strive for a Scotland where every individual receives the support they need to thrive. Disability Equality Strategy and Project Management | Coproduction with Disabled people and People with Lived Expertise | E&I Policy | Disability Equality Community Development
Two weeks ago, I was invited to take part in a panel discussion by Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) at the National Children and Adult Services Conference 2023 for Directors of Adult and Children Services. I was invited to be part of the panel alongside the Director for Adult Social Care at Bristol City Council Hugh Evans. This panel was to look more deeply into the considerations and thinking needed before starting Co-Production. I spoke about … 1. People’s Voice Project - a project to establish a group led by Disabled people with Learning Difficulties in Bristol which colleagues such as Beth Richards, Edwin Shattock, R Banks and myself started but which is now ongoing 2. The importance of population profiles in establishing a working group reflective of the communities that draw upon services 3. The importance of time, budgets, trust building, rapport, theoretical perspectives in any co-production work 4. Whether policies have been truly co-produced (which prompted a bit of debate) … Among other things. Thank you Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) for opening up the space to discuss these topics alongside my fellow panelists Dr Clenton Farquharson CBE, Isaac Samuels, Hugh Evans and with directors of adult social services from across the country. #bristol #disabilityequality #disabilityequity #coproduction #NCASC2023

Here are 2 more simple things your organization or business can do to support #olderamericansmonth! 1) Connect older adults with local services, such as counseling, that can help them overcome obstacles to meaningful relationships and access to support systems. 2) Host connection-centric events or programs where older adults can serve as mentors to peers, younger adults, or youth. #OAM24 #poweredbyconnection #integenerational #socialconnection #socialhealth
