appreciating this helpful reminder about the purpose, intention, and distinctions between safe(r), brave, and accountable spaces. “The kind of space we’re in can deeply affect how we interact with others … This is why it matters how we bring people together.” (👏🏽 Tyne Johnson-Dhillon for Bakau Consulting Inc.) #inclusivespaces #saferspaces #bravespaces #accountablespaces #facilitation #engagement #antioppression https://lnkd.in/giAhJvhM

The third of the 11 common #placemaking mistakes is over-promising and under-delivering. This is a very common chronic issue and leads to: 😀 unrealistic expectations in the community 😠 frustration when those lofty expectations aren’t realised 😒 erodes trust and confidence over time Once you have lost the trust of people, it will be hard work to regain it. So, what can you do about it? Well, under-promise and over-deliver might be an alternative! A focus on action over planning helps to avoid the temptation to over-promise. Start with better understanding the place and building relationships. Quick wins and tactical urbanism trials can help to test ideas, find new opportunities and get some results. Ask others what they might want to do, and then help them to make it happen. We have lots more practical advice how to create great places at https://lnkd.in/gYhRs4NQ. "Cities Aren't Unwritten" In her 2018 article in the Tyee, Melody Ma argues that "cities are not blank canvases. They are organic living beings that reflect their people and their cultures, histories and aspirations." This is her counterpoint to the massive Oakridge Mall redevelopment in the heart of Vancouver, which she sees as "part of a global pattern of imposing formulaic, placeless mega-developments." It seems a very timely (re-)read as we continue planning the future of the Metro Vancouver region - i.e., the bold and imaginative new cities emerging on former shopping centre parking lots, and the large transit-oriented developments on both greenfield and brownfield parcels; and the more 'surgical' precision that will be needed to evolve our established inner-city neighbourhoods. https://lnkd.in/gDYJ5nc9

After 35 years of living in New York, let me tell you the harsh truth: New York is a big lie. The old mantra, "If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere," has become a trap. People walk around thinking life has to be tough to succeed because it’s the New York way, but that’s just not true anymore. The city’s monopoly on creativity and business is over. You don’t have to live in New York to succeed. Why struggle for the sake of struggle? Changes in culture and technology have made success and fulfillment available everywhere. It’s time to choose your own way. When you bring new people into an organization, they come with their own ideas, habits, and even unspoken assumptions about what "care" looks like. Without a clear and well-communicated culture, you risk having a mishmash of practices that ultimately erode your brand and confuse your clients. Culture isn’t just a set of statements—it’s a daily practice that touches every interaction and decision. Twillie Bryant Creative has had the privilege of helping Seema Lakhani of Parkside Tamarac, a new 96-bed memory care community, put this culture in a teachable form. This relationship has allowed me to create something truly special: a Culture Code that embodies the heart and care Seema has cultivated at her 38-bed Boynton Beach location for the past 12 years. At Boynton, Seema built an unspoken culture—one of trust, accessibility, and unwavering support for caregivers and families, earning her consistent five-star reviews and deep connections with those she serves. In order to ensure that this same culture would carry over to the larger Tamarac community, I created the "Parkside Code of Culture," complete with a teaching module, including a teacher’s manual, student workbooks, and assessments. This makes the culture tangible and actionable for every new staff member. At Parkside Tamarac, this Culture Code ensures that Seema's legacy of personalized, compassionate care will continue to shape every aspect of the resident experience. If you’re building or developing a brand, take a moment to reflect: Does your culture infuse every part of what you do? Have you made it clear, teachable, and actionable? Because it’s not just about what you say—it's about how you live it, day in and day out. #Culture #Leadership #MemoryCare #BrandDevelopment #ParksideTamarac #DementiaCarewithDignity
