Government can not and should not be thought of as the be all and end all when it comes to community development. Do they have a role? Clearly they do but, it should be limited to partnering with citizens and businesses to create opportunities. In Port Huron, Michigan, our municipal partner recognizes this role and has properly engaged citizens to develop these new opportunities. Citizens, waiting for your city hall to make life better in your neighborhood is futile. Engage your elected and appointed officials. Demand input and follow through on your commitments. Create a relationship that is mutually beneficial. Seek progress together. To paraphrase the quote of JFK, “ask not what your municipality can do for you, but what you can do for yourself in concert with them”. This is my opinion based on experience. Hard truth: you can't hold all the cards and do place-based community development work. ✔️Shared leadership ✔️Shared visioning ✔️Getting close to neighbors and hearing their priorities ✔️Letting local voices speak into the programs and plans you make Are the only way lasting, place-based change can work. The upside is this: letting go of the idea that it's all up to your organization means you can let go of all that pressure. Collaborating with neighbors to see a neighborhood become a place of opportunity, access, and belonging means many hands must be involved in the work. So let go of the cards, and open your hands to see what neighbors put in them.

A bit long, but an important and timely topic as many housing providers struggle with the same challenges … “Complex Care Housing” is a term to describe challenges that exist when providing housing for people who require additional social supports to help them stay housed. This is not describing supportive housing (which is a critical type of housing offered by organizations like Shepherds of Good Hope Ottawa Salus Options Bytown ) but is used to describe supported housing to recognize that many tenants living in social/community housing do require more supports than are often available. As housing 🏘️ is a key determinant of health 🩺 Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH) has a Complex Care Housing framework to begin working with partners on long term solutions. (Francine Vachon Brian Gilligan Stephane Giguere, MPA, C. Adm, Adm.a) Amanda and the community developers highlighted below do tremendous work at OCH. Everyday they try to support tenants as much as they can. Kudos to them and all frontline workers. #PeopleMakeTheDifference 👇👇👇
