Thank you #BarrFoundation for articulating this powerful, student-centered strategy to achieve school transformation. If your reform, improvement, or justice-seeking efforts in secondary education are NOT centering student voice, I just don't think you can get there from here. If we want students to collaborate with us, we gotta collaborate with them, seek their insight, gain their trust, and work together. At issue isn't whether students can rise to the challenge; it's we adults who need to step up and partner with kids like we mean it. A good example here: https://lnkd.in/daxyXWmt.
When students and adults work together to co-create excellent, equitable high school experiences, students are better able to reach their goals. In this blog, Education Program Officer Alison Gross describes how Barr grantees are leading efforts to position student experiences, perspectives, and ideas as a north star for decision-making.

In her time in public school, Maura Hart never felt safe. Because of this, as adjunct faculty of Antioch's MEd for Experienced Educators, she has dedicated much of her career supporting educators to give them the tools they need to create a safe space within their classrooms. “Rightful Presence in the Experiential Classroom," a course offered in the Experienced Educators program, builds on the concept of rightful presence, a teaching methodology that aims to combat systemic racism by validating each student’s value and their right to be in the classroom, regardless of race or ability. Rightful presence is a framework of a Critical Skills Classroom, which allows the student to choose what they want to learn based on their culture and values, ultimately taking a lot of pressure off of teachers. “If you’re a classroom teacher, and it’s a real struggle, and you’re thinking about leaving, but that’s breaking your heart, try it out," Hart says, “You’ll find meaning and power in teaching using the critical skills classroom methodology.” You can read more about "Rightful Presence in the Experiential Classroom" and Hart's role here: https://lnkd.in/gbjCAGEM
