A regional outbreak of severe weather is ongoing across the northeast USA today, with NY already recording the second highest daily total of tornado warnings on record (# 1 is 41 on May 31st, 1998). Our proprietary Climavision global model had been indicating a consistent environment for substantial severe weather in this area for the last 7 days (and beyond!). The plot below is of CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) and while this is only one piece of the puzzle, it does demonstrate a consistent view of the energy available for thunderstorms to ingest, which gave our customers time to prepare for potential severe weather. This GIF shows our forecast valid at the same time (this afternoon July 10th), across every model run (every 3 hours) back to 96 hrs out.

We're probably all familiar with the jet stream - a fast, narrow current of air aloft flowing from west to east around the globe that directs storm systems. But have you heard of jet *streaks*? They're a portion of the overall jet stream with even faster winds (200+ mph in some cases)! They can lead to very fast flights if they're supplying a tail wind! And they can enhance precipitation if you're in the correct quadrant of the jet streaks! Here's my explanation:
