When boating in an 18-foot boat, you're legally required to have a Visual Distress Signal (VDS). From BoatUS Foundation: A wide variety of signaling devices, both pyrotechnic and non-pyrotechnic, can be carried to meet the requirements of the regulation. 🚤 Recreational boats less than 16' operating in coastal waters need only carry night signaling devices when operated at night. All other boats must carry both night and day signaling devices. 🚤 Any combination can be carried as long as they add up to three signals for day use and three signals for night use. Three day/ night signaling devices meet both requirements. What should you do immediately if a boat motor catches on fire? Don't add fuel to the fire! Turn off the supply if you can safely access it.

Sailboat Regattas - Bouy Racing: Boats race around buoys (Gov marks or race marks), usually in a relatively close proximity area of <3 miles distance between buoys. Not always, but boats usually race “windward/leeward” courses. 🌊 Start/finish in the middle on a line perpendicular to the wind 🌊 Boats will sail laps around the windward and leeward marks https://lnkd.in/eFxBqw8y

If someone's in the water, remember to turn off the engine before pulling them out of the water! you don't want to risk injuries, like being struck by a propeller.
