Navigating the capital city’s rains and dismal sewage system is a given during every monsoon. But the rude jolt one got as one came face to face with the grisly underbelly of this bustling urban metropolis in a premium South Delhi market which houses luxury commercial brands was a shocker to say the least. South Extension has a subway that allows you to move from Part 1 to Part 2 and access shops on both sides without having to navigate circuitous turns on roads that are crowded with bumper to bumper traffic. Taking the subway was therefore an apt choice. Once you walked down the steps a scene from Ramsay Brothers horror movies of yore came alive. Large cobwebs and winged creatures vied for attention as piles of garbage strewn around in heaps indicated that the entire stretch had not seen a municipal workers’ broom in years. A few beggars who were clearly doped and homeless lunged at you with palms outstretched for alms. Naked wires hung around as puddles of dirty water posed risk of electrocution. Dark, dingy and smelly with dry urine made the few minutes in the passage nauseating. More than anything in what was broad daylight the place seemed extremely unsafe. Isn’t urban town planning that guarantees safe spaces and efficient movement of people and vehicles a mandate of every local government. Are no audits and checks and balances in place? Golghar, literally meaning "Round House," was conceived and built by Captain John Garstin in 1786 during the British colonial era. It was constructed to address the pressing problem of famine relief in the region. This colossal granary, made entirely of brick and without any support of beams or pillars, is a testament to the engineering brilliance of that era. As you stand in the shadow of Golghar, you can't help but marvel at the sheer scale of this structure. Its massive dome, designed to store grain for the British army, stretches out like a giant beehive, evoking a sense of grandeur and awe. But this is not just a granary; it's a living museum of history, echoing the stories of colonial India, famines, and the resilience of the people. During the great famine of 1770, Golghar played a vital role in storing grains to mitigate the suffering of the local populace. Today, it stands as a silent sentinel, a stark reminder of the past, and a testament to human endurance. Walking around Golghar, you can't help but imagine what life was like during those tumultuous times. The bricks that make up this structure could tell stories of hardship, courage, and survival. I just read this Hindustan Times piece that says that Nikhil Kamath the co-founder of Zerodha has announced plans to grow 10,000 cherry blossom trees in Bengaluru to make the city cooler. Any initiative to plant trees in Bengaluru is welcome, given that 3600 were cut for the metro project, 1200 are to be cut for the suburban rail project and hundreds are routinely cut for building/widening roads. But somehow this doesn't seem right, cherry blossom trees in namma Bengaluru? A Times of India article last year featured the “cherry blossom like trees in Bengaluru” so maybe Mr. Kamath took his cue from that. These trees that look like cherry blossom trees are actually the Pink Trumpet trees also known as Tabebuia Avellaneda. They are native to South America and so grow easily in Bengaluru, but the cherry blossom tree is native to north America, needs cooler weather and may not survive in Bengaluru. Having watched Nikhil Kamath's youtube podcast, I am guessing he has the advise of native tree experts who can help plant trees that can achieve the objective of cooling Bengaluru. A starting point may be the Indian Institute of Science report on trees in Bengaluru published in 2014 (https://lnkd.in/grMNSaDS.). I still remember riding on my scooty into certain streets close to Gandhi Bazar lined with these massive trees and feeling the temperature drop a couple of degrees.
