What is the most straightforward way to reduce vessel emissions at port?
It is using shore power. This also improves the surrounding air quality for nearby residents, and slashes fuel bills. The Port of Seattle is banking on those benefits and thus mandating the usage of shore power. This mandate, which applies to all cruise ships calling port, will come into force from 2027.
"According to the port, plugging into shore power reduces diesel emissions from cruise vessels at berth by 80% on average.
Furthermore, during the 2023 season, cruise ships using shore power avoided emitting 2,700 metric tons of greenhouse gases and 0.75 metric tons of diesel particulate matter."
This will be interesting to see how crew will adapt to the changes when berthing at Seattle port.
