The United Nations World Oceans Day conference on June 7th took place at the UNHQ in New York with hundreds of participants in attendance to highlight the urgent need for collective action to protect our oceans. Through insightful discussions, innovative solutions, and inspiring performances, the event emphasized the importance of storytelling, inclusive governance, and sustainable economic practices in addressing the challenges facing our marine environments. The call to integrate Indigenous knowledge, foster intergenerational collaboration, and promote proactive investments underscores the multifaceted approach required to ensure a thriving future for our oceans and the planet.
Peace Boat US Director Emilie McGlone supported the event as the Coordinator of the Friends of UN World Oceans Day working group, bringing together civil society and various partners to celebrate this year’s theme of “Awaken New Depths.” Our summer intern team also attended the event and are now planning for the upcoming celebration onboard the Peace Boat this weekend to celebrate the grand finale of World Oceans Week!
The knowledge on the ocean's dire state is clear. Still, each year humanity continues to make shallow and short-sighted decisions that further the likelihood of the ocean's, as well as our own, demise. We don't have time for "out of sight, out of mind." Our relationship to the ocean needs to urgently change, and our efforts have only skimmed the surface to date. To motivate widespread momentum for the ocean, we need to awaken new depths.
