Join the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center’s School Mental Health Initiative this summer for a two-part conversation series, "Healing School Communities in the Context of Faith-Based Bullying." This series will explore the impact of faith-based stigma, contention, and conflict on school culture and climate. It is designed for students, families, educators, and school mental health professionals dealing with the ongoing effects of such bullying. Scheduled for July 23rd & 25th, 2024, the series will review recent data to drive school mental health leadership, policies, and programs aimed at ensuring safety for all, particularly those experiencing high levels of xenophobia, exclusion, and scapegoating. These sessions will focus specifically on anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish bias and hate, acknowledging the recent rise in such incidents and their historical context. Yesterday I attended our local Schoool's Mental Health, Emotional and Wellbeing Conference. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ioan Rees. The key message I took from his talk is that "Children & young people need to have a sense of belonging and purpose." It got me thinking. 🤔 Wouldn't it be wonderful if our schools and colleges were equipped to to do this. That children felt safe; they felt that they belonged. That each child was valued for their strengths, abilities, passions. Not just some stats and league tables. We have an emotional and mental health crisis on our hands where children and young people are expected to fit into tick boxes. There is no individuality. There is no space to be yourself. I know this as a parent having seen my children struggle with school and the support not being available. We shouldn't have to fight the system to get the best support and education for our children. If a child misbehaves or is having a meltdown we don't take the time to understand the root core of that problem but we punish them. We put them into detention and timeout. We wouldn't do this to an adult in a work place (I hope!). Would we? I know teachers and those working in schools are trying their best and do an amazing job. It's the system that is broken. There needs to be a massive re-think and overhaul of the school system so that our children and young people thrive. They are our future generation. I want to see a future and culture embedded in thriving not surviving. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. #schools #mentalhealth #belonging #thriving

🤝 Strengthening School and Mental Health Agency Partnerships: 3 Key Strategies 📘🧠 Supporting our youth's mental health is a vital task, and effective partnerships between schools and mental health agencies are key to making this happen. Here are three tips to strengthen these essential collaborations: 1️⃣ Clarify Expectations: It's crucial for everyone involved—teachers, school counselors, social workers, and agency staff—to know their roles clearly. This not only helps in aligning goals but also in easing the integration of services across different tiers of support. 2️⃣ Professional Collaboration: By learning from each other and sharing resources, schools and agencies can enhance their collective ability to support students. Regular professional development sessions can help ensure that staff across both settings are equipped with the latest strategies and knowledge. 3️⃣ Ongoing Evaluation: Regularly assess the effectiveness of the partnership and the satisfaction of the families involved. This can lead to improved strategies and adaptations to meet the evolving needs of the community. 🌟 Together, schools and mental health agencies can create a supportive network that truly nurtures the mental well-being of our students. Let's make these partnerships work for the benefit of all! 🌟 Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/ehCQkTA7 #MentalHealthAwareness #Education #Partnership #CommunitySupport Tiffany Creager,MSW, LSW

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Georgia Appleseed is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of students through our School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) programs. Given the pivotal role schools play in students' lives, providing mental health support within these environments is crucial. SBBH programs address the significant rise in behavioral health disorders among American youth—a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By integrating mental health services into school settings, we remove barriers to access such as transportation and stigma, making these essential services available right where students are most comfortable. This month, we highlight the importance of these programs, which not only support individual students but also contribute to healthier, more engaged school communities. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eEKD4_Yd and help ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed and thrive. Let's make mental health support as common as the school lunch! #MentalHealthAwareness #SchoolBasedBehavioralHealth #SBBH #GeorgiaAppleseed

As we continue through Mental Health Month, we are sharing more local resources and services aimed at supporting you or your loved ones on their mental health journey! 🌟 🌟 Today, we are highlighting Ashley Mariano, the Prevention Coordinator for the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio, as he shares the importance of mental health resources to our school systems, as well as recognizing the importance and need of trauma-informed care. 🌟“It is very important to focus on prevention in school districts. Prevention is a way to move “upstream” rather than focusing on current crises and being in a state of having to react, we can start to be thoughtful about what supports our students need and start to integrate those things…There’s a great movement in the county that supports trauma-informed care, and we just want to push that into school districts as much as we can, because we know that for student success, we cannot just be teaching them the academic pieces and ignore their physical, behavioral, and emotional parts of themselves. So, we are whole-child focused and it is so important to us to be able to support that need.” 🌟If you are a parent of a child in need of these services, START HERE: Talk to a school counselor: ESC has curated resource lists for every school district that they service, so, if there is a specific need around a type of mental health concern, those school counselors can easily find a provider on that list. Or contact the Help Network by calling 211 or visiting the website at https://lnkd.in/gkqwJtcW Together, we'll navigate this journey with compassion and courage. 💙 Stay tuned for more resources throughout Mental Health Month! #MentalHealthMonth #WhereToStart #StartWithHope #YouAreNotAlone #mentalhealth #kidsmentalhealth #traumainformedcare #MahoningCountyMentalHealthandRecoveryBoard #MCMHRB #ESC #AshleyMariano
