Two years after the passage of the Virginia Clean Economy Act, we should see substantial progress toward the VCEA goals, the most significant being a 100 percent clean grid by 2045, but a lot of renewable energy deployment remains stalled at the local level. There are escalating community challenges over land, energy, and politics. The article explores the Commonwealth of Virginia’s VCEA and why in the face of a strong state mandate, local problems loom large for renewable energy deployment - talking with developers, local officials, and others to learn more about their pain points. https://lnkd.in/es-EUA66

We need to scale up renewable deployment, and quickly, to reach our climate goals, but #siting and #permitting these resources can be complicated, with processes and decision makers varying from state to state.   A new inventory of siting policies from all 50 states and Puerto Rico (and an interactive map!) sets out to simplify this complex web of energy laws and regulations for policymakers, developers, and renewable energy stakeholders.   Months of research from Regulatory Assistance Project and Clean Air Task Force, with support from DOE, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Consensus Building Institute, went into building these resources - huge shoutout to Nelson Falkenburg and the rest of the project team! Of particular relevance to BLM’s final rule, Title IV of CETA incorporates Levin’s Public Land Renewable Energy Deployment Act (H.R. 178). The title directs the Department of Interior to permit at least 60 gigawatts of renewable energy on public lands by 2030 and responsibly incentivizes this development on priority areas, while minimizing the adverse impacts to communities and the environment. https://lnkd.in/eFku_xgq

This project has replaced aging oil boilers in 11 different plant rooms with a network distributing heat to the buildings on site. The heat is now supplied by ground source heat pumps installed in the main plant room, which extract heat from an array of 215m deep boreholes in the college’s car parks through underground pipes resulting in the delivery of 705kW of thermal energy. Notably, the heat pump technology is currently the only form which allows for rapid decarbonisation of heating. This project was delivered in a live environment, the site operates 360+ days a year, with up to 2,000 pupils and staff on site. Republishing my project of Site Suitability Analysis for Wind Farms in California, this project leverages a GIS multi-criteria approach to identify areas with the highest potential for wind energy production. California is a leader in renewable energy, and wind power plays a crucial role. By strategically placing wind farms, we can maximize energy output while minimizing environmental and social impacts. This project explores factors like: -Wind speed and consistency at a certain height (> 7.5 m/s) at 80 m above the ground. -Land cover and topography. -Proximity to existing infrastructure. -Environmental considerations.
