It's a crash course in understanding your product and its market. 2. The Unofficial HR Guru: Teammates might turn to you before HR. While support is important, set boundaries. Direct serious issues to HR while empathetically listening to minor concerns. Your focus? Keeping the product development process smooth. 3. Learn to Say No: Prioritize tasks to maintain focus and productivity. Don't hesitate to decline tasks that detract from your core responsibilities. "I can collaborate with a cross functional team"... This is the response of many job seekers during an interview when they asked about collaborating with a team. What is a Cross functional team? It's a team of experts with different skills, all working together to achieve a business goal. For example, a business is made up of different teams - accounts, customer support, stock and inventory team, logistics, procurement etc to achieve customer satisfaction and drive revenue growth. A lapse in one team can affect the output of the other. Hence, the need to have everyone's eye on the goal. In the tech space, a Product Manager is the one who has to ensure this team made of designers, developers, cybersecurity experts , data analysts etc, is in tune with the product vision, and does their tasks within timeline and meets the acceptance criteria. Non-tech businesses have their PMs as the General Manager, supervisor etc who is incharge of all departments in the company. Each Cross-functional team has a team lead who ensures that his team is on track. Then the team lead updates the Product Manager. For the past 6 weeks, I have been managing a cross functional team with the vision to achieve an MVP for hospital finance management in Nigeria. It's been an experience in all shades of its good and bad. But we're still pushing it.
