Ericsson leads group of relevant Telcos to orchestrate global network API supply. First step igniting network effect by opening-up 5G networks for expanding choice to application developers and enabling new revenue streams for the telecom industry. The journey towards solving challenges lined out in our post last week has started: Beginning of 2025, the new JV will sell combined open source 5G APIs developed by the growing CAMARA community to a broad ecosystem of developer platforms, including hyperscalers, CPaaS providers, System Integrators and Independent Software Vendors. Vonage and Google Cloud will be partners of the new company from day one, providing access to more than 10 million developers. https://lnkd.in/e33J3W89 We also witness a business model innovation from network infrastructure providers, like Ericsson, enabling their telco clients to federate and scale enabled network functions to monetize investments into their 5G infrastructure. The bold market forecasts and the JV is built under the assumption that it will create network effects, a pull from application developer’s demand and a push from the long-tail of telco supply. This is why the next steps of the JV have to focus on: 1. Demand: Co-creating the new use cases for banking, logistics, and manufacturing, among others, identifying the levers for the enterprises to increase customer intimacy, unleash efficiencies and embark into new business models. 2. Supply: Facilitate the access of the remaining 470 telcos world-wide to the JV services and make it easy to expose their network APIs profitably, considering investment already made into CPaaS-, wholesale- and non-CAMARA network APIs. Being an integral part of the Telco community, we at Detecon are committed to support the increasing collaboration between large operator groups and smaller telcos, federated API-service exposure platforms and hyperscalers, systems integrators and enterprise architects, ensuring the best application developer environment possible, and of course, bring our value to Customers. To start your journey we recommend you joining the API Capability Exposure Brandhouse at Digital X next week September 18 and 19, 2024, in Cologne https://lnkd.in/exeyZ5eV. In the meantime, let us pay tribute to some of the pioneers making this tectonic shift happen from the DT and Ericsson-side: my respect, bra jobbat ! Andreas Schlegel, Oliver Buschmann, Peter Arbitter, Niklas Heuveldop, Matthias Budde, Christer Boberg, Dr. Kerstin Baumgart, Rolf Nafziger, Omar TAZI, John Saw, Nathan Rader, Joakim Sorelius amongst others. for more details on the challenge: https://lnkd.in/edZKeEyp

My latest Omdia report (subscription required) examines the progress of the GSMA's #OpenGateway initiative one year on from launch and how various technology vendors are positioned. 47 multinational mobile operator groups (representing 65% of global subscribers) have joined the initiative but 13 of these have still not made any launch announcements. There are notable gaps in major economies such as India, and Canada, where no operators have publicly announced API launches. In several other countries only one operator has launched. These gaps must be filled in soon to make network APIs more appealing to developers that are creating apps to serve consumers globally. The APIs that seem to be of greatest interest so far are antifraud-related: 25 operators have launched SIM Swap APIs, and 22 have launched Number Verification. QoD is less common given the technical challenge of implementing this capability in the network. Microsoft has announced the most telco partners for its API aggregation platform (Azure Programmable Connectivity) so far, well ahead of Ericsson's Vonage, Nokia's Network-as-Code. The other main contenders for network API aggregation are Infobip and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Google has been less visible but recently announced a collaboration with ClearX to make Open Gateway APIs available via its cloud console. Another notable vendor is LotusFlare whose BSS suite is used in T-Mobile's DevEdge developer marketplace and Deutsche Telekom's MagentaBusiness API portal. Operators’ own developer portals are unlikely to be the main distribution channel for network APIs. However, the operators’ developer programs can help them to co-create and innovate with their enterprise customers, tailoring solutions to solve specific problems or develop new services. https://lnkd.in/eDHqEGat

NEW #mwc24 – BARCELONA – AT&T officials said the company plans to begin shunting commercial traffic into Microsoft's Azure Operator Nexus platform starting later this year. AT&T's Yigal Elbaz called the platform "remarkable." "Things that took us weeks and months take us days now," he said here on the sidelines of the MWC Barcelona trade show. "We wanted to benefit from automation and APIs [application programming interfaces] and toolings that exist in Azure." Yigal Elbaz, SVP and network CTO, AT&T, at MWC in Barcelona. The move would cap years of work between the two giants. AT&T first announced in 2021 its landmark agreement with Microsoft, and since then the companies have been refining and clarifying the parameters of their complex deal. Basically AT&T sold its "Network Cloud" core operations and staff to Microsoft for an undisclosed amount. AT&T is leasing back that operation just as Microsoft is using the product to build out its new Azure Operator Nexus platform. Microsoft officials explained that Microsoft essentially wrapped its code, security and existing Microsoft framework around AT&T's "Network Cloud" core product in order to produce Azure Operator Nexus, which Microsoft is now selling to other network operators. Thus, Azure Operator Nexus stems from the telecom technology Microsoft acquired from Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch Networks, as well as AT&T. Emirati operator Etisalat emerged this week as Microsoft's second customer for Microsoft's Nexus platform, after AT&T. But AT&T officials reiterated that this is not a move into the public cloud. Microsoft's Nexus platform is "running in our data centers, on our hardware, operated by us," Elbaz said. MORE: https://lnkd.in/gKhuuUui CC Shawn Hakl

Learn how Rakuten Symphony and 1&1 AG built Europe’s most modern, software-driven mobile network in Germany 💯 Full story: https://lnkd.in/gECCAt4B "All network functions are located in our private cloud and are controlled by software. As a system integrator, Rakuten also ensures that all network components interact smoothly. In this way, 1&1 benefits from the extensive experience that Rakuten has gained in recent years in operating the world's first Open RAN in Japan. The full functionality of the 1&1 O-RAN is a major milestone in our company's history." -- Ralph Dommermuth, CEO of 1&1 AG In 2021, 1&1 picked Rakuten Symphony to build Germany’s fourth mobile network and the industry anticipated a revolutionary software-driven design. Just 28 months later, the network launched as promised with a fully cloud-native approach across core, OSS, BSS and RAN. 1&1 anticipated that the network would be more agile, highly modularized, and based on a software-first approach – and they were right. Now, the two companies have published a case study (https://lnkd.in/gb7EKm5y) that describes the network building process and the resulting network capabilities in full detail. Here are some of the key network stats 📖 a) 1&1 is running Europe’s first end-to-end fully containerized network entirely on the cloud. b) In 2023, 1&1 launched its enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) service for mobile.
