Elevating community health--including access and equity--is both a hot issue and a rising expectation of health care organizations. This means philanthropy leaders must understand the issues and be prepared to talk about the rationale for charitable support and partnership.

It is no secret the business of health care is experiencing one of its most tumultuous times in history. There is no shortage of reports on the challenging financial health care marketplace. This creates complexities for the C-Suite, challenging them to successfully operate and navigate through the tumult while also staying true to their organizations’ missions, values and visions. In times of uncertainty and financial challenges, campaigns are a crucial lifeline for organizations seeking to sustain their missions and serve their communities’ health needs. These times also create challenges in building and launching large-scale philanthropy efforts. According to Merriam-Webster, the primary definition of trust is, “the assured reliance on the character, ability, strength or truth of someone or something; one in which confidence is placed.” Trust is at an all-time low in our country. Events over the past few years have helped to create this decline and the trend is one all of us in health care philanthropy should be addressing, as health care is being directly impacted. A lack of trust prevents patients from seeking care and believing when they do seek care they are receiving the best possible. A lack of trust prevents people from investing in their hospitals for fear their money won’t be used wisely. A lack of trust prevents neighbors from linking arms together to support their communities and effect change for the better. Is it possible for those of us in philanthropy to combat this growing trend of distrust and move the needle to a more positive state? The answer is yes, and it starts with a core tenet of our profession: relationship building. #USA 🇺🇸: Delighted to join my fellow Evaluation Panel Reviewers for the Yield Giving Open Call & members of the Lever for Change network in sharing and amplifying the following exciting news: Today, MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving announced that 361 organizations are receiving $640 million for their work with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. This cohort of 361 outstanding teams from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico will enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. These community-led, community-focused organizations work in urban and rural settings, with individuals of all ages, focusing on a wide range of issues. Yet, they share a common sense of purpose: the Open Call awardees are all making positive change in their communities by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues. The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. In the Fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause, and underwent a final round of due diligence. In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount. The 279 organizations in the top tier of scores will receive $2 million each, and the 82 organizations in the next tier will receive $1 million each. Congratulations to all of the awardees! Not-for-profit, charitable hospitals must conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and implementation plan once every three years. Through this process, CHC helps hospitals better understand and meet the needs of the communities they serve.

How can increased investment possibly occur as hospitals are often operating with little to no profit margin, among other financial challenges? Where can hospitals find funding to elevate community health when they often cannot cover operating costs? There is an increasing source of revenue many hospitals are capitalizing on for these increasing health and well-being initiatives. It is called philanthropy. Philanthropy is not a panacea to all challenges faced by hospitals and health systems. However, by harnessing the power of philanthropy, hospitals and health systems can close fair share deficits while making strategic investments in the drivers that determine our individual and collective health. Health foundations have a significant opportunity to harness the influence and involvement of board members as great allies in advancing the mission. Too often, however, board members begin their tenure with a significant disadvantage in that their roles and responsibilities have been poorly or shallowly defined and explained. Board members generally come to nonprofit organizations with the desire to affect positive change. They wish to leverage their unique skills, insights and influence to move the mission forward. Yet, many board members will confide they were thwarted in their intentions to contribute by not having access to the information needed to be successful. Given the competitive advantage board members can bring to the organization, it is essential to start and to continue supporting a high value relationship with each board member through access to information and tools.
