Let’s dive deeper into reflections from our February KCT session all about KC's education and workforce development landscape - Pictured below are shots from presentations by Noah Devine, Executive Director of Missouri Charter Public School Association, and Dr. Jennifer Collier, Superintendent of Kansas City Public Schools. Noah discussed KC charter school performance & strategies for improvement, while Dr. Collier outlined the district's approach to holistic student development and reflected on the hard decisions education leaders have to make, such as closing schools. Check out a few key insights from the day: 📌 The critical need for KC residents to pass a general obligation (GO) bond was the most recurring theme of the day. School districts dependent on property taxes are NOT sustainable. 📌 The KC School District will ask voters in April 2025 to do something not done in decades: pass a general obligation bond to pay for repairs at district schools. Business leaders who live in KCMO can support this effort by voting yes! 📌 Our "Preparing the KC Region for Tomorrow's Workforce" panel featuring Greg Mosier, Elisa Sader Waldman and Larry Rideaux, Jr., Ed.D. sparked a deep reflection on the evolving relevancy of 4-year universities compared to trade schools, community colleges, and stackable credentials. 📌 What can business leaders do to support workforce development efforts of our leaders in higher education? Upskill their current workforce and commit to second-chance hiring to meet future workforce needs. 📌 Natalie Lewis emphasized Great Jobs KC’s initiative on multi-generational scholarships offering $50,000 for traditional education & workforce training. Great Jobs KC, formerly KC Scholars, has a 70% graduation rate - That's more than twice the national average! 📌 Susan Wally and Anna Hennes, MBA highlighted the alignment of Market Value Assets in high school with student outcomes and workforce needs. #KCTClass45 #Advocacy Consuelo Ross

Turning Around Troubled Schools: A New Chapter Begins Transforming a school's reputation and culture can truly be a monumental task. The journey of Leigh Academy Minster on the Isle of Sheppey is a testament to the power of leadership, community engagement, and unwavering commitment. After a damning Ofsted report and staff walkouts, the school has made substantial progress under new leadership and policies. Strict rules on behaviour and lateness, along with a no make-up policy and the establishment of a long-awaited library, have started to turn the tide. The investment from the Department for Education and the involvement of the Leigh Academies Trust (LAT) have played crucial roles. Staff report a significant improvement in student conduct and overall school environment, proving that clear expectations and consistent boundaries can make a world of difference. Parents like Gemma Dawson and Lloyd Page, who were initially sceptical, are now re-evaluating their stance, impressed by the school's renewed commitment and cleaner environment. Teachers such as Tracy Bradd emphasise that while no system is perfect, the structured approach is making a positive impact. It's clear that rebuilding relationships with the community and setting high standards for students are pivotal to this transformation. What are your thoughts on the importance of school leadership and community trust? https://lnkd.in/e2nGRuCx #Education #SchoolImprovement #CommunityEngagement

After attending numerous conferences and meetups with charter advocates over the past several months, one theme stands out: the critical need for adequate time and funding to open charter schools successfully. How many months should realistically pass from authorization to opening day? And how much investment is truly necessary for a school's first year? Unfortunately, too many school leaders are not given the runway they need, leading to financial strain and burnout before the journey even begins. This not only impacts individual schools but also the charter movement nationally. Let's collaborate to ensure new schools are set up for success from the start—not burdened with debt or deferred projects. It's time to support our school leaders with the resources and timeline they need to thrive. Together, we can make a difference! Hubrich Contracting, Inc.is dedicated to charter school success! #CharterSchools #SchoolLeadership #Education #CharterSchoolFunding #EducationalSupport #SchoolSuccess #HubrichContracting

Co-Founder at Student Basic Needs Coalition | Partnering with foundations and higher education institutions to tackle student food and housing insecurity, ensuring all students have the resources to thrive.
What happens when you empower students to not just access resources, but to lead the fight for their own basic needs? At the Student Basic Needs Coalition (SBNC), we’ve seen firsthand how student leadership can transform campuses and influence policy. Last spring, our goal with the Hunger Free Campus Act in Michigan was to reignite passion and discussion around addressing college food insecurity—and our students led the charge. Reflecting on the day, one of our students said “Through this day on the hill, we were able to create discussion around the bill in question and bring college food insecurity to the front of the minds of those who represent us throughout the state on the higher education committee. As a whole, we were productive in advocating for a policy that will serve college pantries and allow them to provide an increased number of services.” By teaching students to share their personal stories with policymakers, we’re creating a movement that doesn’t just address symptoms but drives real, systemic change. With the right funding and support, we can continue training the next generation of student leaders to take on these challenges head-on. Learn more about how we accomplish this here: https://lnkd.in/eHQrGGWX When you invest in student leadership, you’re investing in a future where every student has the opportunity to succeed. #StudentLeadership #PolicyChange #HungerFreeCampus #HigherEd #FoodSecurity #SNAPOutreach #SBNC #InvestInChange #SocialImpact #Philanthropy
