As we head into the New Year, I'm reflecting on what Lawndale Christian Legal Center accomplished in 2023 and looking ahead optimistically into 2024. I am sending a big thank you to everyone who supported the impact we are having on the communities we serve. If you have not made a year end gift to LCLC, you have one more day to donate here: https://lnkd.in/gE669Tyz If you have already donated, I hope you take a moment this weekend to reflect on the difference you have made -- the lives you have touched that will be better off because of you. The impact we've had is the result of all of us working together to make it happen. THANK YOU! Let's play the 2023 highlight reel (enjoy!): - Robin Steinberg, the national leader in community holistic defense, is supporting us with help from The Bail Project, one of our best-ever partners - Nearly completed the consenting process for our RCT -- 630 of the 660 consented with more coming in this week - Secured $3MM funding to sustain our successful roll out of Community Release with Support + expand into Maywood and Rolling Meadows - Illinois ended cash bail in September! And we are proving it's safer and successful! - Deepened our partnership with CLIHTF to connect our clients to housing - Awarded $5MM in city funding to house our clients, the largest investment in our clients' housing needs likely in the history of Chicago! - Raised $21MM in capital funding to construct our Residential Workforce Development Center! - Completed nine-month SWOT analysis and have been implementing solutions since - Unprecedented earned media coverage due to the great work our team is doing! The impact we're having is undeniable: - Community Holistic Defense -- ~340 youth served annually, 82.2% not catching new cases while in our care, 75% are being connected to critical social supports, 53% progressed in employment, 66% progressed in school, 46% no permanent felony records, 62% stay home instead of prison - Community Release with Support -- ~3,000 clients served annually, 98% returned to court, 64% cases dismissed, 100% received court reminders and transportation as needed, 57% linked to social services pending trial - Restorative Justice Community Courts -- we started the first in North Lawndale, two more have been added, 219+ emerging adults served, 84% charged with felony weapon possession, 86.9% have not caught new cases compared to 34.8% from a matched control group (conversely only 13.1% caught new cases in RJCC vs. 65.2% outside of RJCC) - Housing Justice -- We linked ~50 clients to housing with over 100 family members + another forty families in the queue for 2024. We go into 2024 with the unique expertise and value we have created in the field of criminal justice over the last fourteen years. We go into 2024 with a bright future, bold vision, and a great team of people dedicated to making our world better. Happy New Year!

https://lnkd.in/ehAeETeR Family Justice Strategy 2022 - 2025! The vision of the first Family Justice Strategy is a modern, streamlined and user-friendly family justice system that supports simple, early, fair and – where possible – non-adversarial outcomes. The Strategy was developed by a Family Justice Oversight Group chaired by the Department of Justice and made up of representatives across the family justice system. The work of the Group was supported by two expert advisory groups, comprising stakeholder representatives from NGOs, legal practitioners, researchers and academics. It was also informed by a wide ranging consultation process where relevant stakeholders, the public, children and young people who engage with the family justice system gave their views on how a modernised family justice system should look. The Strategy will support the legislative changes proposed in the planned Family Court Bill. It is envisaged that, through the implementation of the goals and actions in this Strategy: It will be easier to access information about the family justice system. Services and supports will be easier to find. People will have better awareness of the options when seeking to resolve their issues. The family court structure will be in place. The Hammond Lane Family Courts Complex will be advanced. Children and those most vulnerable will be provided with improved supports. The family justice system will be more accessible, easier to understand, access and navigate, and more responsive to its users’ legal needs. More will be known about different aspects of the system, which can support the development of further reforms.

I started working at the The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland as a housing attorney a little over two years ago. During this time, I have learned a remarkable number of things from my clients and coworkers. Their resiliency and passion inspired me every day to advocate on their behalf, in court and in my workplace. I handled over 200 cases, going to trial over a hundred times, and helped around 90-95% of my clients avoid an eviction judgment on their records. The summary nature of evictions is a brutal gauntlet for tenants. I was in court two to three times a week and watched poor people (overwhelmingly Black in Cleveland) be evicted from their homes (by overwhelmingly white landlords). Tenants are scheduled in a cattle-call manner, sometimes 15-20 per hour, and barely even provided the time or dignity to tell their story. I highly recommend observing an eviction docket at your local municipal court if you have not done so before. I have a lot of thoughts and observations that I am going to share over the next couple weeks/months about my experience. The two central questions I kept asking myself and invite you to consider when you read these stories is: What was my role in this system? Does it have to be this way? Pictured is one of those days when I was in court accompanied by Kiki, my personal assistant. #legalaid #lawyers #socialjustice #housingjustice #evictions #capitalism #unionstrong #solidarity #community #cleveland

Candidate for District Attorney, Sixth Judicial District, NM - Southwest New Mexico Prosecutor of the Year in 2018
Community Safety is the issue: Over the last several years, drugs have permeated the community fueling high crime rates and devastating families. Despite New Mexico's intense uptick in crime, Wheeler has leveraged his extensive legal experience prosecuting violent crime as well as his relationships with law enforcement to successfully manage hundreds of cases at a time. "The District Attorney's Office should not be politicized as it has been. I intend to refocus the office around an aggressive, intelligent analysis of facts applied to the law, not around who knows who," said Wheeler. Before prosecuting felony-level cases in judicial districts across the state, Wheeler focused on family law and juvenile court matters. In addition to his legal work, he sat on the Adult Drug Court panel in the sixth and eighth judicial districts. In 2018 Wheeler was named "Southwest New Mexico Prosecutor of the Year" by the New Mexico State Bar Association. Above from the Grant County Beat https://lnkd.in/gfhTB7z3 Need more information? When a child’s well-being is at risk, securing temporary guardianship is vital. In Texas, the individuals who can obtain this guardianship typically include: • Other Parent: If one parent is unable to care for the child, the other parent often steps in as the first choice for temporary guardianship. • Caring Relatives: Grandparents, siblings (18 and older), and godparents who have been actively involved in the child’s life. • Long-Term Caregivers: Anyone who has been entrusted with the child’s long-term care may qualify, pending court approval. Trust Stepp Law Firm to expertly handle your guardianship matters with care and precision.
