LinkedIn is an odd social media platform for me. In reality I'm not big on posting ANYTHING on ANY social media (unless I'm traveling), much less speak about accomplishments.    However, I'm very proud of having worked the last year through an extensive leadership training at Hays. Finishing 12 months of sessions, small groups, assignments, thought sharing, and learning, I'm looking forward to putting everything into practice. Huge shout out to Jason Motley for moderating us and Shenlee Walker for all the tough love and watching our group forget what "BIFF" stands for ...    BUT!    Jason asked us to share what our key takeaway was from the past year of leadership training, and I doubt it's a surprise to many, but mine is "PEOPLE FIRST". You don't need a fancy title to make a profound impact. I really believe in the concept of building leaders at every level of an organisation. Henry Ford had it spot on with this simple observation: “You don’t have to hold a position in order to be a leader.” I often get asked for thoughts on this from ambitious people who are earlier on in their careers. I believe, within your sphere of influence (however small that may feel) you can absolutely: - Take ownership. - Embrace challenges. - Proactively collaborate. - Champion positive change. - Exemplify the values you want to see around you. One day, when you get the title, you’ll want to be a leader that people commit to and don’t just comply with because of your position. You can start to become that leader today. Or from Monday... When did you last feel fully seen and heard at work? It's a powerful feeling that provides: ✅ recognition ✅ purpose ✅ motivation As a senior leader, it can also be a challenge to cultivate that presence, especially if you've built your reputation on multitasking and "having huge capacity."  Learning to achieve a state of presence is simple, but not easy. It requires consciously navigating the different voices, feelings, and perspectives within ourselves. And recognising that the complex tapestry of our experiences, doubts, and aspirations will not disappear through sheer willpower and control. At least, not for long. The ability to be fully present and hold your space is a rare skill. Yet it's in these moments of genuine presence that we establish ourselves as authoritative and credible leaders. When we are wholly engaged with our team, our clients, and ourselves, we create a powerful connection that fosters trust and respect. Developing this presence takes time and practice. Coaching is one way of developing executive presence, as it provides a safe space to explore and navigate our inner world. It allows us to identify and address the barriers that prevent us from being fully present and enables us to cultivate the skills needed to lead with presence and impact.
