Join us on October 3rd for a webinar marking the 6th edition of our annual National Climate League report, a volunteer-driven survey of climate plans, targets, policies, and programs for 53 municipalities across Canada. We're excited to discuss the results with our guest panel, Mairin Loewen (Saskatoon city councillor), Andrea Reimer (Professor at The University of British Columbia, formerly City of Vancouver city councillor), Margo Sheppard (City of Fredericton | Ville de Fredericton city councillor) and project volunteer Emma Mungall. The National Climate League is a network of volunteers who, over the past year, took a deep drive into local plans, reports, dashboards and meeting minutes to gather data assessing their municipality on 23 climate policy indicators and 5 outcome indicators. The survey included municipalities from all 10 provinces, ranging from small towns to large cities. Our report pulls together the National Climate League's findings, including an analysis of country-wide trends, as well as examples of how cities and towns across the country are approaching the challenge of building low-carbon, equitable, and affordable communities. Register here to receive the report and attend the launch webinar: https://lnkd.in/ghyX7v6p

In a new, comprehensive review, The Greenlining Institute and the USC Equity Research Institute studied the impact of the California Climate Investments (CCI) over the past decade, focusing on the equity and effectiveness of these investments in serving the communities most impacted by environmental injustice. The results show that policymakers and funders committed to equitable climate action should also invest in community power by centering community needs, voices, and agency. 🗣️ “…By listening to and understanding their personal experiences and local insights, we can continue to ensure that our Climate Action Plan considers those most at risk and really works for our residents.” Cllr Mete Coban MBE, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport — London Borough of Hackney’s first ever Citizens’ Climate Jury has completed, with local residents making recommendations on the ways that Hackney can prepare, adapt and respond to extreme heat in a way that is fair and works for everyone. Hackney’s Citizens’ Jury included 15 local people, who have developed recommendations around themes such as: greening, vulnerable groups; new builds; communications and community engagement; hospital care; and upgrading existing buildings. Through this work, Hackney have set an example for how citizens should be included in decisions around complex and controversial issues like our response to climate change. Bringing in the informed judgement of the public can help decision makers to tackle these issues and create policy that is rooted in the perspective and hopes of the public, helping to form policy that is more likely to work on the ground. 🗣️ “…If I can manage to create a little change in my little borough, in my little part of London, then if Hackney can achieve it, what can other boroughs achieve?” Jury member, Addie. — 👀 Keep an eye on our website and socials around July for Hackney Council and their partners to publish their response to the Jury’s recommendations. They’ll also include how the recommendations will be taken forward as part of their undertaking towards a healthier borough and future.🌿 📖 Read more about our Citizen’s Climate Jury with London Borough of Hackney here 👇 https://lnkd.in/etKhwVZd And find out more from London Borough of Hackney below 👇https://lnkd.in/euPkC2sV

WWF Cities works to mobilize action and support from cities in the global transition towards a sustainable, 100% renewable future.
Many of us have known for years that reaching the 1.5C target of the Paris Agreement is virtually impossible without acknowledging the dedicated efforts of local governments and other non-state actors. Awareness for this somewhat obvious and well-founded claim has gained a great deal of momentum the past few years. So the question remains - why is there still a gaping hole on urban content in nationally determined contributions (NDCs)??? A recently published report examines this question more closely and clearly reveals opportunities for enhancing multilevel climate action 👋 UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) The analysis shows: ❌ Only 27% of NDCs have strong urban content. 🌍 Over 70 countries endorsed the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP), yet the overwhelming majority have moderate, low or no urban content - showing potential for enhancing urban content to greater contribute to achieving global climate goals. 🌟 Dive into the technical brief: https://loom.ly/QbW1H1A

Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and our response to it underlines every policy decision we make, every pound we invest and every project or service we deliver. It is great to see North Kesteven District Council featured within the report by Climate Emergency UK CIC - the report profiles our ambition for climate action and the role of planning policy in delivering a net zero future for our communities. It also features our initiatives in supporting communities and employers…a collaborative place focused approach to achieving positive change. Our investment programme in housing builds to passivhaus standards, supported by significant investment to retrofit existing properties. Globally the next few years are critical. We need to see a step change in national policy and global action, an emergency response to achieve a 50% cut in emissions by 2030. The window for action is closing fast. Time to champion a just transition to a regenerative, liveable future. You can read more about our approach here: https://lnkd.in/e4ikWdPp. #leadership #localgovernment #climateaction #climatejustice #lincolnshire #sdgs2030
