Carbon offsets have been getting a lot of bad press... But in an ideal world they can help direct capital to conservation efforts that might not otherwise be funded - helping to put the 'net' in net zero. Given their fiduciary duty, institutional investors' relationship with offsets is more complex. Rachel Barrack and I have been looking into how long-term investors can navigate the challenges of nascent carbon markets and support global decarbonisation efforts. Read more about carbon offsets, and more of the team's investment perspectives, below!

"I didn't think it would be controversial, but I guess it is. And here we are." This morning, Wall Street Green Summit Founder, Peter Fusaro, joins David Greely for a preview of this year's event, focused on ESG investing and reporting, carbon markets, climate finance, clean energy solutions and greening transportation. Now in its 23rd year, the #WallStreetGreenSummit is one of the longest running and most comprehensive sustainable finance events in the world and covers cutting edge content and industry developments, featuring the leading practitioners in #sustainability. When asked by Greely why he's put #ESG at the forefront, Fusaro responds: 🗣️ "Because it's not going away. We're looking at the beginning of a market. Sure, there's controversy like pension funds in Florida and Texas will divest from ESG lenses. But the point is, I actually think they're losing what I used to call environmental alpha. They're going to have below market returns. And frankly, if this thing is done right, it's going to be how you transform your portfolio, because the first thing you have to do is measure your #carbonfootprint. Energy is 73% of greenhouse gases. So #energy companies are dead center here. So that's the easy part. Controversy is good. I like different points of view, but we specifically kick it off with #ESG because eventually, things change. I thought this thing was going to be more mainstream. I didn't think it would be controversial, but I guess it is. And here we are." Get the rest at the 🔗 below: https://lnkd.in/eQN-FeHs

💭 Ever wondered how climate-tech companies are disrupting industries with new technologies, or how emissions measurement models are being used to forecast a company's potential to bend the emissions curve to net zero? 🎧 To find out, tune in to the Good Future’s podcast episode, hosted by John Treadgold, to hear what our Senior Partner Clara Barby has to say about climate-led investing…
This is one episode not to miss - Just Climate is a leading example of how to shift heavy-weight institutional capital to decarbonise hard-to abate sectors. Clara Barby is Senior Partner at Just Climate, which was spun-out of Generation Investment Management, the sustainable investment firm launched by Al Gore. She's also worked at leading impact investment firms Acumen and Bridges, and, she steered progress at both the IMP and the ISSB. In this conversation she offers a compelling case for the power of ‘climate-led’ investing to not only revolutionise high-emissions industries, but also its potential to deliver competitive returns to a stable of institutional investors. Just Climate closed a $US1.5 billion funding round last year for its Industrial Climate Solutions Strategy, and more recently announced the launch of its Natural Climate Solutions Strategy. I really enjoyed this one, we go deep on the fund’s unique investment model, and Clara offers valuable insights into the evolution of carbon accounting, and how the emissions avoidance potential of a company can be modelled with (almost) as much accuracy and signal as you’d expect from a financial model. Enjoy! And let me know what you think...
