The recent report of renewables surpassing 30% of global electricity generation is surely a cause for celebration, but not one for complacency. Although a monumental achievement in the fight against climate change, this is just one step in a long journey. While crucial for a clean energy future, renewables alone don’t erase existing carbon emissions. Exploring how carbon offsetting can bridge the gap to net zero and empower businesses is a crucial part of the solution. At Climate Wise, we help companies offset their carbon through comprehensive assessments and accounting. Why scaling potential of electric renewables is the critical variable to ensuring climate compliance by 2035 - 2050. But we still need base line electric production during no sunlight. So the problem is the roll out of the mix and the grid.

A resilient and cost-effective transition to 100% renewables in the UK would require at least 27GW of wave energy capacity, new research has shown. LUT University in Finland has released a new report that explored the pathways for the UK to switch to a 100% clean energy system by 2050. According to the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the UK is off-track to deliver its ambitions of a net-zero power grid by 2035. Every second counts indeed! Flexibility is not just a "need", it is a viable, usable, accessible capacity source. Combined onsite generation and storage assets with Demand Side Response can deliver substantial flexibility to the grid. Looking forward to increased monetisation of flexibility services, clearer framework and greater accessibility for multiple BRPs.
Flexibility is 🔑 – in many areas of life. Would you agree? And especially so, when designing future power systems. Our window to reduce emissions and keep our planet habitable is closing. To meet the climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement and to prevent global temperature from rising above 1.5C, we need to act fast. 🌏 Simply scaling renewables is not enough. We need a more flexible energy system to support a renewable future. 💡 Discover our 3️⃣ crucial principles for a flexible energy future in our Insights article 👉 https://lnkd.in/d9TVN8jS #EverySecondCounts #Flexibility #EnergyTransition #WartsilaEnergy

We're not used to getting good news on the climate. Let's face it, we're not used to getting good news on anything these days. So let's take a detour from news that's stuck where the sun don't shine to some energy news related to where the sun does shine (and the wind does blow and the hydro does flow). "The world reached a huge milestone in 2023: Renewable sources accounted for 30% of global electricity for the first time. That’s the biggest takeaway from the annual report produced by the energy think tank where I work, Ember. The rapid growth in solar and wind power has brought the world to a crucial pivot point — likely this year — where fossil fuel-powered generation will start to decline at a global level." Semafor: The world has passed a turning point in the history of energy. Dave Pell
