As we enter the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, it's important to remember that tropical cyclones are changing due to human-caused climate change. Current projections suggest that hurricanes may be less frequent, but more intense and damaging. In this deep-dive article, we focus on hurricanes originating from the Atlantic. We explore the key physical risks, the impact on local infrastructure and assets, and how to be more prepared. October 2 segment by William Brangham, PBS NewsHour. Description - Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida but towns hundreds of miles from the coast have seen some of the worst destruction. Communities once considered ‘climate havens’ are facing a harsh reality, there may be no such thing. William Brangham discussed the impacts of a warming world and what individuals and communities can do with Alex Steffen, writer of the newsletter, "The Snap Forward." #climatecrisis #flooding #extremeweather #climatehavens #alexsteffen #pbsnewshour

Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Capacity Development and Gender Expert at The CCREEE, recently appeared on 'The Conversation' with Kwame Thomas to discuss the urgent need for improved climate resilience in the aftermath of the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. Ms Farquharson discussed the factors that contributed to Beryl's rapid intensification, how this compares to historical hurricane patterns and the long-term implications of more frequent and powerful storms because of climate change. 🌀🌧️ Hurricane Helene devastated the southeastern U.S., flooding over 100,000 buildings and causing an immediate $20 billion in damage and economic disruption. Yet, the real blow may lie ahead, with economic losses expected to surpass a staggering $100 billion. In this article, we analyse the role of climate change in intensifying Helene, the devastation in the aftermath and the potential long term financial consequences, likely to last for years. While human-caused climate change is creating stronger hurricanes, we argue that skyrocketing losses aren't inevitable — if appropriate action is taken. With the right strategies, communities and businesses can protect lives and mitigate damage to properties, infrastructure and economies in the face of increasingly powerful hurricanes. Curious how? The Caribbean, renowned for its vibrant cultures, stunning landscapes, and idyllic weather, is increasingly grappling with a less glamorous but critical issue: the impact of climate change. This challenge was starkly highlighted by the recent passing of the earliest-forming Category 5 Hurricane Beryl in 2024. Read this latest article by Latoyaa Roberts as we discuss the issue of loss and damage within the context of climate change and disaster preparedness. #climatechange #caribbean #lossanddamage #disasterprepardeness

As climate change continues to warm our oceans, hurricanes like Hurricane Milton are becoming more frequent and intense. Warmer waters provide more energy for storms to grow stronger, and rising sea levels increase the risk of devastating storm surges. Climate change also affects wind patterns, which can lead to slower-moving storms, causing more prolonged damage. Right now, our hearts and prayers are with Florida as it faces the impact of this powerful storm. Protecting our planet from climate change is crucial to reducing these dangerous hurricanes. Stay safe, Florida—our thoughts are with you. #HurricaneMilton #PrayersForFlorida #ClimateAction

Climate change didn’t necessarily cause Helene, and it’s not unprecedented for storms to move far inland. I personally lived through Hurricane Hugo in 1989, which drowned Charleston, barreled past Columbia, remained at hurricane strength all the way to Charlotte and was still a tropical storm by the time it hit Lake Erie. But when hurricanes do form, high temperatures can supercharge them. The Gulf waters over which Helene passed on its way to Florida were 80 degrees Fahrenheit at depths of up to 400 feet. At New York’s #ClimateWeek, much of the talk has been about whether humanity is transitioning quickly enough from the fossil fuels that are generating the greenhouse gases warming the planet. Helene makes several emphatic contributions to the discussion. Gift link to my column from Bloomberg Opinion: #hurricane #hurricanehelene #helene #climate #climatechange https://lnkd.in/daQXQatQ

Here’s a Greg Fiske #MapMonday comparing El Niño and La Niña typical sea temperature patterns. Climate change is contributing to larger swings between the two phases. Currently, the Atlantic is headed towards a La Niña, which favors hurricane formation because it lessens vertical wind shear.
