Networking tip #12: Subject lines matter. Or do they? When messaging people on LinkedIn asking for time to connect, I typically make the subject line something like “Time to Connect” or “Time to Chat”, but I also haven’t given much thought to this. I recently had a conversation with a friend, and she mentioned that she feels like she’s shooting her shot messaging a bunch of people, but not getting any responses. She also mentioned that her subject lines with these messages were usually something like “[Insert Job Title] Applicant”, as she was applying to roles at said company. In thinking through this more, I wonder if including the word “Applicant” leads employees to feel like the person reaching out thinks they’re a recruiter. Or thinks they can help with this application, when in reality, they can’t. In giving more thought to subject lines, I’m thinking of changing mine to “15 Mins to Chat”, nailing down the two pain points of getting people on the phone – I will not take up a lot of your time, and this isn’t transactional, I just want to chat. Do you think subject lines matter?

The Power of Networking in Tech Sales: A Personal Reflection In the fast-paced world of technology and software, building meaningful professional connections isn't just about collecting business cards; it's about forging relationships that can shape your career trajectory. Personal Experience: Early in my journey, I was introduced to the world of tech sales, armed with enthusiasm but lacking a robust network. It didn't take me long to realize that success in this industry is not just about what you know but who you know. Networking became my secret sauce, my backstage pass to insights and opportunities. 🤝 Insights: 🧠 Access to Insider Knowledge: Through networking, I gained access to invaluable insights – industry trends, emerging technologies, and even insider perspectives on what clients are truly looking for. Collaboration Opportunities: Collaborative projects often stem from networking. The exchange of ideas, the synergy of skills – it's where innovation happens. Professional Support System: The tech sales journey can be a rollercoaster. Having a network of professionals who understand the highs and lows can make all the difference. Thought Leadership: As we navigate the digital landscape, virtual connections are as crucial as in-person ones. Embrace LinkedIn and other platforms to expand your reach. Share your experiences, insights, and challenges. Be a beacon of knowledge in your network, and watch how the community reciprocates. #TechSales #Networking #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalConnections #InnovationHub

Luring job seekers into Zoom calls under the pretense of discussing job opportunities or professional networking, only to use the time to push a sales agenda, is deeply disappointing and unprofessional. This experience reinforces why I’m cautious about accepting connection requests from individuals outside my field without a clear context or purpose. Preying on people’s vulnerabilities for unsolicited sales pitches is unacceptable. Finally, trickery and dishonesty are poor sales tactics that can seriously undermine both your services and your credibility. Let’s keep professional interactions honest and respectful.

Networking on the internet is robotic. Online networking: "Hi! I'm Courtney, I recruit for folks like yourself who work in staffing, I'd love to chat with you about the industry, when will you have a few minutes?" Networking in person: "Oh you're a recruiter? So am I. What industry do you recruit for?" One of these examples ends with either no response at all, or something to the tune of "Thanks for reaching out, but I'm happy in my job. I'll let you know if that changes" and the other results in a conversation. I'll let you decide which is which.
